Whorls and Cowlicks!
  • I've grown up hearing old wives tales about the location of the center whorl on a horse's face indicating the temperament of the horse (higher up = hot, lower = slow and easy going). My gelding even has a "bad omen" wheat ear whorl under his neck like Sham from Marguerite Henry's King of the Wind!

What tales have you heard about cowlicks and their meanings? I'm curious!

  • Double whorls = high strung
Swirl to the right = right handed (hooved?) horse
Swirl to the left = left handed horse
I think Dr. Temple Grandin did research about it, and found some truth to the wives tales.
Not a whorl, but my mare has "crushed velvet" over her neck and shoulders. It is big patches of hair growing in different directions.
  • My mare has a whorl above the line of her eyes so, according to the wives tale, she should be high strung but she’s the sweetest and the most easy going gal ever! She has a Colt with a double whorl and he holds up to it, lol.

  • Its definitely true for cattle as well!

With cattle, when heavy pregnant if poll hair is messy it's supposed to be a bull calf, smooth supposedly a heifer calf.
