Horse Winnings
-
As you look at horses through the “view in search” option, what do the winnings placed next to the points represent? Do they matter or should you just focus on the points?
-
A lot of discussion is centered around points because the more points you have the higher your daily payout in addition to winnings. From what I understand they go hand in hand until a horse levels off in training- winning= higher winnings= higher points. After a horse levels off they gain fewer points with winning, so their daily payout stops growing, but they could still earn good hbs until they age out.

The show/points system has gone through some changes a few times. I remember reading once that the winnings would be very important, because something like the points didn't get you a daily bonus and so your income was based on the winnings of your horse. Nowadays it isn't that important as, as Looper said, we mostly base a horses worth on overall points now.Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.

On the look out for pointed creates -
After a horse levels off they still earn the same number of points for placing in the same spots.
They gain fewer points towards their show score after they level off until that score stagnates. Sometimes a horse will gain the most amount of points after they level off since they tend to place more consistently in that level without moving up to the next level as their score increases.
I tend to only look at Total points in the search. Winnings is just how much money has the horse won in its shows.
As said above the old show system winnings was more important than points because you only made money when you entered a horse in a class (which ran on the expensive side) and the horse placed in the top half. If you didn’t show a horse you didn’t get any money. Now the show system is very cheap to enter so everyone can afford to show everything and the winnings are also low as you now receive 75% of the number of points all your horses hold paid out each week.

I remember those days when the only income boost from showing came when your horse placed in the top half of the class so that it would earn a cash prize larger than the entry fee. I reached a point where it was taking me hours to keep track of every horse's probable weekly increase in show score so that I could enter them when they wouldn't be losing me money (especially in the higher levels with large entry fees). The shift to the showing bonus based on points was one of the best additions to the game ever. All hail to our glorious leader, Ammit!De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."

I find this concept of making money showing anything to be hilarious. I show dogs, and it is a huge money pit. Fun, and it keeps me off the street, but a profitable venture it is not.
I can only image that showing is even more expensive in horses!Thanked by 1ObsidianKitsune -
I enjoyed the old show system as it helped me learn about spreadsheets :D I had one set up to tell me when to enter every horse in my barn and since it was such a hands on show system it kept my barn small. Now that you just show everything every week my barns have grown like a bad weed so I don’t have time to really go through and enjoy my foals.
@whitemountain it definitely depends on the club your showing with. Normally I show at a local club show and spend about $40-60 to enter all my classes each show and pay for memberships and such but at the end of the year we usually come out well since there aren’t a ton of adults showing so we get a few grand and reserve placings and make my money back in gift certificates and prizes. This year I’m going to paint shows and it’s significantly more expensive and not sure how we will make out at year end but it feels nice to have new goals to work towardsBreeding even generation Grullos with Ice
