Pastured Mares and Current Lifetime Payout
  • May have goofed with my first 12 Foundie mares. They are 8-9 years old and half are leveled off. I've been pasturing them to get the pasture bonus then showing them once a month after breeding. I understand they kept training while in the pasture and will keep receiving points as I keep showing them even after being leveled off. Lifetime Payout depends on points so I'm concerned now did they miss out on a very significant amt of points the 3 show opps out of the month that they missed being pastured before they finished training?

I'm not quite at the level of having a show pool and a breeding pool, everyone is pulling double duty if they aren't snipped, but now I'm wondering if I should change tactics and hold off breeding a mare until she's leveled off and showed every year before that until I can have a dedicated breeding pool. I'm looking at salvaging time with my 4-6 year foundies if it's worth it instead of continuing to breed every year I have them.

At what age does a horse begin to lose value instead of gain it? When they are leveled off?

    Thank you!

  • Personally I keep breeding mares and show horses separate, so my breeding mares will never get the points as they never show being in the pasture. I have enough show horses, and want my mares to keep the pasture breeding bonus. Nothing really has changed to before, except for now you can get horses showing value paid out once they 10yo rather than every week. I never earnt money from my pastured mares before, so still don't.

If you have the room to pull mares in and out of pastures, I think may as well leave your favourites in the pasture, and buy/create some others with higher points to stay in as show horses

They level off roughly around the same number as their PT, so a 10PT horse will level off around 10yo. But if they level off in a good spot, so just started placing high in their classes, they will stay there for quite some time earning lots of points. Those sorts of horses might be worth keeping
  • Clipped horses get a training bonus every week so they earn more money. They never loose money, they just stop training so don't advance to show levels with bigger purses.

It's never to soon to start your show herd if you want to breed. I have a 1 to 1 ratio, and make just under 20k. I've seen someone who started the same time with a 1 breeder to 3 show ratio mention they are creeping up on 100k daily. Show horses are cash in the bank.

  • I also keep my breeding and show herds separate. My best mares stay in pasture full time and never come out, so they always have the max breeding bonus.

In a 4 week month, there are 8 times a horse can potentially show. If you pull your brood mares out for a week and show them twice, they're only showing 25% as often as a designated show horse. Their earnings are going to reflect that.

(I mostly built my show herd by keeping all my foals who failed BA. They get that training bonus from being snipped, and have their entire lives to show. Those horses are a natural by product of the breeding I'm already doing, so all it costs me is barn space.)

I'm not sure what you mean by "when does a horse begin to lose value" -- do you mean for the estimated payout? That shows you how much you would earn from a horse if a) you never showed them again and b) they lived to be 18. As long as you continue to show a horse, that number can change.

Leveling off doesn't mean they stop earning points, unless they end up at the bottom of their class, which is purely a matter of chance. If a horse has leveled off but is still placing at the top or middle of their class, they are going to keep earning points. More points = more daily payout. A horse that is showing well can earn more points every week until they age out.

One way this new update is going to change the way I manage my show herd is that I'm going to periodically look at my show horses who have leveled off, and see if they're at the bottom of their class instead of at the middle or top. The ones who aren't earning new points are the ones that I'll consider putting into auction for the new "current lifetime payout" price.
