Need some help finding my HAJ purpose
-
So I haven't seriously done any breeding on this account for two seasons and I feel bad just letting my mares sit in the pasture. The problem though is I just can't get a solid breeding goal. I have all kinds of pretty genes, with lines all over the board, but I feel like I'm just floundering and not making any real progress beyond "ooh that's pretty."
Does anyone have any suggestions of how to bring back my pony mojo? I'm frustrated and need a light at the end of the tunnel.ID# 45936 - Breeder of high quality Irish Cobs and Ardennes
I'm also Firebrand! - she/herThanked by 1FollysFantasies -
This right here is why I have multiple accounts. I literally get to pick who feels pretty today.
Honestly... Let you pastures auto run and take some time to wander threw life... I promise your mares will be fed. That's the best part of this game... You can take 6 months off and come back if you're ready.... Or bootstrap those pretties and make bank til something calls to you.45140 -
I just came back from a bit of hiatus myself. I felt a bit guilty not breeding anything, but coming back has left me refreshed and ready to purge, and in a similar spot to where you are now. My first step is going to be figuring out which genes I really, desperately still want to breed for, and which genes I can just drop to my bootstrap herd only.
I bought a new pasture for introducing my lower papered mares from other lines into my bootstrap bunch without seriously throwing off my method, and my lines are getting a major sweep through. You might try counting your number of lines, and giving yourself a "cutoff" so , say you have twenty lines, telling yourself you can only have fifteen. That will tell you what your least favorite lines are, the ones that don't really bring you that sense of joy as much as the others. (Can you tell my roommate's been watching Marie Kondo?)
You might also try combining lines. That can be an easier way to simplify your effort. If you have livers and appaloosas, make a liver appy line! If you love satin and pearl, satin and pearl line! Figure out which genes don't overlap the others, which genes work well with others, and that can help you further simplify.
It might also be time to increase your standards to trim down individual lines. My bootstrap mares are running scared because I'm upping the weight/height requirements again :PID 45703 | he/himOpen barn policy - no closed lines! I'm always selling straws and eggs from anything I have that catches your eye, don't hesitate to PM me and ask! -
It took me a long time (over a year) to sort out I wanted DP brown with white. That is my main goal in my lined herd.
I then had a little purge of uneven and sorted out my barns a lot. I definitely agree with trimming down the lined herds. :)
I swap my pastures around a lot - sometimes I put foundations and sometimes those bootstraps in to concentrate on different gens.
I merged 2 of my accounts (to make it easier on me).
I sometimes set myself little goals with trying to get on the leader boards with particular things eg high PTs from my bootstraps or breeding the highest brindle PT etc.
Trying to merge your lines to see how wild you can get those fantasy lines is also fun.
I find bootstrapping is my release. A few great studs and breed to everyone (or just a few choice mares) - stop following the rules of line breeding and see what you get :)
Make it fun and good luck..
Breeding brown/liver/black with white spotting drafts. If you ever fancy straws PM me. PM me if you need help with GE. -
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with “randomized” breeding if that’s what you enjoy! I enjoy not having a clue what I’m going to get from my mixes. Some months I like DP, some I like cream, some I’ll take any kind of white I can get. Some months I don’t know what I want, so I just pick out my show ponies and auction everything else for a break.
At the end of the day, this is meant to be fun and relaxing. :) -
I have my main lines, which are evenly bred DP, KP and silver, I then add many fantasy genes to this mix. Like Dinascar said though, I often have lots of mini goals and pick them up or drop them as the mood takes me. You can aim for one or more LB's, you can try for a certain colour combination, all sorts of mini goals you can try and then drop them which keeps things a bit interesting for me. Sometimes for me just triggered by someone asking for something in the forum, and I discover it's something I don't have, so I try and breed it, just because LOL!Thanked by 1Dinascar
