Teeny spots?
  • I rolled this lovely Appaloosa girl today, and find her just so sweet. The tiny little white spots on her seem much smaller than “usual” Appaloosa spots though. Does anyone have any idea what could have caused this? Is there a way for me to replicate it via breeding? Thank you!

  • That happens when you have the ECA3P alleles at +s instead of the other option, which makes the blanket size bigger. If you tinker with it in the search you can find a lot of examples on how it acts. :D if you have LpLp instead of LLp, the blanket is going to be solid and the spots of regular coat color that normally show through are going to disappear. :)
So yes, you can breed for it. :D
  • @RoseFlute thank you so much!! That is awesome information!
  • Are you talking about the appaloosa blanket, and how small it is, or the small speckles of white that go up her neck and across her body?

The second is varnishing, which will white out the coat. Because your mare is young, she'll varnish out earlier than most.

  • @ObsidianKitsune I meant the white speckles :) the younger the varnish appears, the earlier they’ll go white?
  • What a beautiful mare!

In my experience as an appy breeder, varnish markings this visible at her young age of two indicate that she has heavier varnish, so you should see a very noticable change in her appearance each month. All appaloosa images on the game change monthly, but on some it is not as apparent as hers. As foals they usually look about the same, varnish-wise, but the visible variety in varnish is interesting when I make four-year-old Herd Helpers.

She will probably look nearly white by her mid to late teens. Her black spots in the triangle wedge of her blanket may stay, similar to this horse:

Varnish is a trait not currently visible/editable to players (exception: we can edit snowflake onto the varnish when snowflake is for Gene Modification sale), so we often have to wait and see how much an appaloosa will varnish out as they get older. I wish it was available to edit, because I would remove it as much as I could. I want the color on my appaloosa horses to stay longer than it usually does.

Here is an example of a 23-year-old with lower varnish. Your mare’s varnish will probably resemble this horse around age six.

You may want to save her image each month, so you can look back on her progress. I don’t keep pictures of all my appaloosas, but I save pics of my young snowflakes, because they tend to lose their color by early teens.

  • @Alohomora that is all super useful information! Thank you :) I’ll have to watch her closely over the months...saving her photos is a good idea!

Are snowflake and varnish related? I know snowflake seems pretty desirable, but I’ve also seen a lot of people dislike varnish, so that’s a little confusing.

And thank you for the compliment on her! I feel like the blackout ExPro Appaloosa HHs really helped me quite a lot!
  • If you are interested in seeing how different levels of varnish affect appaloosas as they age, I'm currently working on this project here you might be interested in. I haven't updated the online albums in a few game years so it might be time to do that again soon.

  • My fascination with the appoloosa genes in this game are high. While most of my accounts just want appy, this one wants a whole army of blue roan tiny blanket, large spot, high varnish babies with champagne and cream making regular appearances.

Is the dappling a kind of varnish too? A lot of Caught Me Standing Alone and I Was Going for Merry's foals have strong dappling under their other marking whether they are a blanket, spots or paint horse marking.
  • The dapples on that foal are the result of being gray. Grey, like varnish will produce progressively more white as the horse ages, and dapples are a common intermediate stage. The other genes which can cause dapples are silver, sooty, DP, and champagne. The dapples from those genes depend on the horse image generator as to whether or not they show up, and re-rolling the image can cause them to show up or vanish. S+ always causes distinctive dapples unless the base color is too light (eg. cremello) or dark (eg. black) to show them.
