My western pleasure gelding is broken
-
I have a POA x AQHA gelding who's been doing western pleasure/halter for 7 years, and I've always played with the idea of doing hunter under saddle with him. Turns out he'd actually be more suitable in hunter over fences! I've been free jumping him, and he is not afraid of big jumps! I had to stop him at a meter 30! He's only 15 hands, so everyone at the barn is harassing me with requests to show him in jumpers and XC :))
My trainer: "Sophie, you're gonna have to kiss his pleasure horse days goodbye"
*I'd attach an image, but I don't know how* -
I love horses who excel at things that would surprise you! I have a more huntseat paint horse, but we still go on everything for highpoints and fun, and (somehow) we have more wp points than English together! It’s hard for a big horse to do that and she already has hock issues occasionally, so I don’t push her, and at shows she just kinda tries all by herself!
I also knew a draft that jumped better than he drove. And a saddlebred who does wp better than saddleseat
Be fun to try for highpoints now! I wish my trainer and parents were more open to me trying different disciplines on my horse than they are currently.Breeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses.

Horses are very surprising creatures. I do want to show him in hunters this summer, so we'll see how that goes. And if I can get him going (blast him and those slow lopin' QH genes), we'll attempt low jumpers. Fingers crossed!

I think a lot of appaloosas are hiding more ability than they ever get to show. I had a 14.2 hh appy stud we called Baby (he was that gentle) who could darn near fly. He stayed in the fences as a favor to me, not because he couldn't get loose, but I never knew it until a couple stray dogs went after my two mares and newborn foal one day when he was five. I was coming out of the house to chase the dogs off when Baby cleared a five foot stock panel with room to spare, jumping out of his part of the pasture to go protect 'his' ladies. He got there before the dogs did any serious damage and chased the dogs off, but I had to leave him out with the mares for a couple days before another neighbor let me know he'd taken care of the dogs. When I put Baby back in his pen, he stayed there even though the mares were both open and we all knew he didn't have to. :x
Baby was a really special horse all the way around, though, the only stallion I ever knew that I could hand to someone that knew nothing about horses, even a small child, and never worry. That's how Baby got the nickname. He was 'that one sweet baby' to my mom, who was scared of horses and thought him being small meant he wasn't full grown. She was intimidated by most horses but she loved feeding Baby carrots (and cookies, and donuts, and fruit, and crackers, and the occasional french fry. Lol), and he started to come to anyone who said Baby near him, looking for a snack. :D~*~ Justa ~*~
