What is DP?
-
I've been trying to figure it out from pics but so far not positive on if I know what it is. Is it dappling or something like that?
-
It doesn't have anything to do with dapples, which can occur spontaneously in every color, I believe.
DP stands for Dense Pheomelanin. Pheomelanin is name of the pigment cells that turn horse hair (and probably that of other mammals) red. DP causes the red pigment to continue building up in the hairs, making them much darker than normal.
There are two darkening genes--Sooty (Ssty) and DP. Every horse has two alleles of both genes, one from its sire and one from its dam. when a chestnut horse has three darkening alleles, it is a Liver Chestnut. It can be SstySsty DPdp or Ssty DPDP. If it also carries Cream, you will have a Chocolate Palomino. Chestnut and Palomino horses that are homozygous for both darkening genes will appear black.
There is no gene test for DP.
Some examples.

DP also affects the darkness of Bay coats, but since there is no special name for them horses that carry it can be difficult to learn to identify.
Even Black horses can carry it, but, since they have no red hair, it doesn't affect them, just as Flaxen doesn't.De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."

Apparently there is a mechanism behind dapples - I remember Ammit saying that it could be selected for, kind of like spot size in appaloosas. I'd be curious to see how big they can get.
Also, DP can affect any red pigment, so champagnes, bays, browns, buckskins etc can show it, there's just no change in the name of their color.Thanked by 1SandycreekFarm -
Here are a few more DP examples
syysty with DPDP and roan
All freaky Friday horses are also homozygous for DP. Even if they're black like this mare
This colt is also DPDP but he is showing very bold dappled as well as silver
This is a brown horse with double DP as well
Silver black with dappled and at least one copy of DP
I have more but don't want to hunt them down lol. Hope these guys provide some visual reference. I try to breed for DP as much as possible. My goal is black chestnut----

Melanocyte is the name of pigment cells. Pheomelanin is the name for red/brown/orange pigment specifically.Need to contact me? Read this first. Only send me a PM for PayPal issues or if I ask you to. Otherwise, make a forum post. You will get a better faster answer by making a post.

@jezmynespice1 Since she's SstySsty and not liver then she doesn't carry DP. They need to have any 3 in combination to be eligible for the breeder's club. The first mare, however, is homozygous for both.Thanked by 1jezmynespice1

Liver chestnuts can be StyS DPDP , there just needs to be 3 darkening genes, but yes, your little girl there is StySty DpDp. Very Nice!

Awesome, thanks
