Sol Meets Kallessin, part 1 of 4
Sol leaned deeper into the sunlight-dappled shadows in the orchard. He didn’t really want to be found. The sweet scent of the flowers had long since faded, and the branches hung heavy with fruit. Soon the harvesters would be along to start gathering the pomegranates, but for now the orchards were still. The thickly planted trees in this older section of the orchard blocked any sounds from students training in the yard, and even the horns blown to mark midday sounded faint. Sol had discovered the solitude of the old orchard early in the advanced course of studies that would earn him his tortador black cloak. He had needed a place away from the bustle of the school, to practice in peace and work through difficult problems. The ancient grove, rumored to have been planted by Kuast himself, was less than a half a mile from the main yard if you didn’t mind jumping a few walls and ditches. The long way along the cobbled or rutted paths was closer to three, so not many people went there. At first it was just Sol. He later showed it to Boagus so the two could compare notes on the more complex magic without everyone distracting them. Then Boagus brought Milla out to “admire the moonlight” and soon the entire class would sneak out on pleasant days or cools nights, much to the consternation of Lord Halsen, who never did figure out where they went. But those days were past. Milla had taught with Professor Diket for a few years before being sent to continue her education under a potions master in the Tehran. Lukal had washed out and was a message rider, riding legs from the Tehran to Shadoin. Tristus and Girale were garrisoned in Felding, and Natia was second-in-command at a small outpost near the border with Farnhar. Even Quiroga, who was technically a year behind them in training, but had latched onto Sol and Boagus, had earned his cloak, and was serving in Shadoin under Lord Quinalaos. And Boagus was dead.
Now it was just Sol and his thoughts, and the orchard was still once more.
His thoughts made poor company these days, but he still preferred them to the company of pitiful looks and furtive whispers. So when he heard the sound of approaching hoof beats, he pulled his crutch off the main path and leaned deeper in the shadows. It was impossible to truly hide – it was an orchard, not a wild grove – but hopefully whoever it was would ride on past. The hoof beats stopped, and he heard a pair of boots hit the ground. No such luck then. He closed his eyes. Sleeping, he mused, the last hiding place of the desperate everywhere.
The sound of boots strode purposefully towards Sol, then stopped near him. Sol waited. He had nowhere to go. He could pretend to sleep the entire rest of the afternoon. Unlike the students, he wouldn’t get demerits if he was late for dinner. Hell, the tree trunk was surprisingly comfy. He might even take an actual nap if Boots waited long enough.
“I can wait longer, if you like, but I’m not going anywhere.” Sol didn’t move. He also couldn’t place the voice. Who did he not know, that would know to look for him out here? Sounded young, at any rate. Must be a student.
“I really can.”
Sol cracked his eye open a sliver. A light haired boy stood in front of him, wearing the grey trimmed cloak that marked him as a student in his one of his last two years of regular training. Almost time to declare if he wanted to try for advanced studies. Sol idly wondered if the boy in front of him would seek to get his black cloak and follow down one of the paths of the friends about whom he’d been reminiscing.

Sol Meets Kallessin, part 2 of 4
“I only just got the grey. I don’t even start the declaration process till next year. Are you Lord Solemines?”
Sol sighed, giving in and opening his eye all the way. “Unfortunately, yes. Who’s asking?”
“Oh, I’m Kallessin, sir. Professor Tateh sent me to fetch you. He said he didn’t want you to forget that you were invited to dine with Lord Halsen, and that you and he were supposed to meet for tea beforehand.”
Sol had not forgotten. Possibly because there was no such invitation. Sol happened to know that, even setting aside Halsen’s dislike of him, Lord Halsen had departed for Agostinium that morning. The King’s pilgrimage would be passing through there shortly, and Halsen, Lord of the Valley, was expected to travel with him for some time. And if Tateh wanted to meet him for tea and not for whisky, Tateh could bloody well wait until Sol had limped back to the school. If it meant missing dinner, all the better. Sol looked at Kallessin.
“I’m not going to dinner tonight. Lord Halsen won’t be there. Sarna will send something to my room anyway. She thinks I don’t eat enough.”
Sol waited.
“Why are you still standing there?”
Kallessin shrugged. “I was sent to fetch you.”
“Sent to - fetch me? What am I, a stick? I am not, and you may tell Tateh that.”
Kallessin didn’t move. “He said you might be stubborn. I’m not going back without you.”’
Sol narrowed his eye at him. “Tell me…have you pissed anyone off lately? Annoyed Tateh or Diket or something?”
“No, well…”
“Ah, spit it out.”
“Professor Tateh thinks I’m bit too proud of myself--”
“That can’t be it, he thinks that of everyone.”
“I don’t think so, then. I don’t have any demerits or anything.”
“You’re not having enough fun, then.”
Kallessin bit his lip. Sol waited. Wait for it…
Kallessin finally blurted it out. “Did you really paint the king’s horse? Like, really? Everyone says you did.”
“I did. To be fair, I was aiming for someone else. Halsen was still pissed though. He’s never let me forget it.”
Kallessin gaped at him.
“What?”
“They still let you graduate? As tortador and everything?”
“Kid, if you cause enough trouble, they’ll let you graduate as anything you want just to be rid of you. I mean, Halsen tried. He threw everything he could at me to get me to wash out when I threw my hat into the ring. Just too stubborn and too stupid to quit.”
Sol thought somberly about that for a moment. “Perhaps I should have.”

Sol Meets Kallessin, part 3 of 4
Kallessin didn’t respond to that. An awkward silence stretched out, Sol leaning against his ancient pomegranate, Kallessin standing on what had once been a cobbled road but was not mostly loose rock and weeds. Kallessin finally shifted his weight and spoke again.
“So…are you going to come, or not?”
“Let’s summarize. Halsen is not here. The midday horns were at least three hours ago, possibly longer. If you haven’t heard, I don’t walk very quickly anymore, and it’s going to take me at least an hour and a half to walk back, possibly longer. I will barely make it back in time for the meal, much less for tea. So the answer-”
Kallessin broke in. “I brought a horse for you! I didn’t expect you to walk back.”
“What.”
“I mean, she’s not fancy or anything. Just one of the old girls that helps teach the kids, but I thought…you know…I’ve heard you used to be quite good, and Stefan said you got on and walked around a bit last week, I just thought you might like it.”
Sol started at him. He highly doubted Stefan had said anything of the sort. He had been extremely self-conscious about his lack of skills, and had ridden early with the sunrise in order to avoid making a spectacle of himself. He supposed there were probably enough eyes around the yard that it wasn’t exactly a secret, but he knew Stefan well enough to know he wouldn’t have talked about it. That wasn’t the point though. His couple laps around the empty pen had taken both Stefan and Tateh to boost him and his bad leg up. “Exactly how do you expect me to get on?”
Kallessin brightened at once. “Oh, I have that sorted. Come and see.” He dropped down on Sol’s left side, and offered his shoulder for support. Sol looked at him out of the corner of his eye. Most people offered their right hand to help him up, then got flustered when he pointed out he couldn’t grab it. He mentally replayed the conversation in his head. Huh. That was interesting.
Sol begrudgingly accepted the proffered shoulder and managed to regain his feet. Kallessin passed him his crutch, and they set off toward the junction of the paths, where Sol could see two Valley horses grazing on shoots growing up between the trees. He was not surprised to see that one was the same washed out mare he had briefly ridden the week before. He was surprised to see the long, sloping ramp that emerged from the middle of the cobbled path. It ended at just the right height, for say, a man with one bad leg to be able to slide his bad one over a horse’s back. He inspected the pattern of the cobbles on the side. He was impressed. The kid hadn’t just pulled up the ramp from the ground, he did it artistically.
“Okay, Tateh was right. Now you’re just showing off.”
Kallessins grinned at him, unashamedly. “If you’re going something, you might as well do it right.”
Sol rolled his eye at that. Gods save them from overeager students. Thank Andolin he was never like that.
On the ride back, Sol mostly let Kallessin lead the conversation. He did speak up at one point though.
“Your accent. Can’t quite place it. Mostly Valley now, but what’s under it?”
Kallessin self-consciously ran his fingers through his fair hair. “Sevetium. Small town in Erasmus, near Farnhar. Not much out there.”
“I know it, actually.” Kallessin looked surprised. “Yep. Traveled through there with – with a friend of mine right after we got our commissions. Pretty area. Nothing like where I grew up.” Damis, he thought to himself. It’s nothing like Damis, where I left my grieving mother behind.
Kallessin smiled. “Nope, all sand and rock. Nothing green and growing like Damis. Big family though. Couldn’t imagine having to leave my mum behind with no one else there.”
Sol nodded, then listened as Kallessin turned the subject to his first impressions of the various professors. No, Solemines couldn’t imagine having to do that either. Especially he could barely remember what his mother looked like. He’d lived with his older sister in the city of Askis on the other side of the river bend.
The rest of the ride continued peacefully. The mare, who had been a packhorse before her current job packing city kids around as they learned to ride, ambled placidly next to Kallessin’s gelding. They were back well before dinner. Sol could see Tateh through the open window of his class room, and Kallessin helped him up there stairs without having to ask. Sol hadn’t realized how passionately someone could hate inanimate objects like stairs until he had to navigate them with a barely healed leg and a crutch that was barely tall enough for him.

Sol Meets Kallessin, part 4 of 4
He slowly sank into that chair at Tateh’s desk while the latter exchanged pleasantries with Kallessin and gave him a pass for missing afternoon classes. While his back was turned, Sol helped himself to Tateh’s decanter and poured a generous serving of whisky into the now-cold tea. When Tateh joined him after sending Kallessin away, Sol eyeballed him.
“What was that about?”
Tateh gave him an innocent look. “What was what about?”
“Halsen will never invite me to dine with him. I could save him from being impaled by Sarbanis, and he might finally forgive me for existing, but I’m not even entirely certain about that. If you want to get me here, come up with a better cover story. So what do you want?” Sol drank deeply from his cup.
“You don’t give Halsen enough credit.” Tateh shrugged. “Mostly I just wanted you to talk to Kallessin. He’s almost as bad as you are.”
“No. He is nothing like me.”
Tateh snorted. “True, in that he actually pays attention during class. No, I’m talking about the noticing things part. Picking up quickly. Observant. Like you.”
Sol shook his head. “No.” Tateh made to protest, but Sol continued. “No, I watch people. I listen to what people say. Kallessin? He hears what people don’t say. He’s a Listener, Tateh.”
Tateh frowned. “Your Saraki is showing. There are no mindreaders in Rakia.”
“Oh come off it. There’s no Listeners here because the craft’s been forbidden for a thousand years, right. Doesn’t mean they don’t exist. It was only forbidden in Sarak about a hundred years ago, when they killed them all after the attempted uprising. They’re still finding natural Listeners, they just kill them instead of training them now. Just like regular mages, the magic exists whether it’s trained or not. What was it Kuast said in his parting gift? ‘Once every generation the curse shall rise and so on and so on’? He knew.”
Tateh still looked doubtful. Sol pressed on. “Has Stefan told anyone that I tried to ride last week? No? Didn’t think so. And he and his boys rode up to the mountains to get last year’s yearlings to bring them down for breaking. So how did Kallessin know to bring the same horse I rode last week, much less that I could ride at all? He knew I was wondering what year he was in his studies before I even opened my eyes all the way. He also assumed I was from Damis just because I was thinking about it. And I highly doubt you knew where to find me, or else you would have sicced Halsen on us when Boagus and I used to skip class. But he rode right up and knew I wasn’t sleeping. Mindreader.”
Tateh studied his drink. “Do you think he knows?”
“How would I know?”
“Guess.”
Sol considered thoughtfully for a long moment, topping off his cup with more whisky. He pretended not to notice Tateh moving the decanter out of his reach. “Probably not. But if he doesn’t, he’ll figure it out soon. No one really talks about them, so most people in Rakia don’t even realize it’s a power mortals can have. It belongs to the Vreulta, not to humans. The stories my sister used to tell me, the powers grow with age. I’d bet he didn’t have it as a kid, and might just think it’s a side effect of learning magic. Or maybe he just thinks he’s going mad – remembering conversations that didn’t take place. Hearing what people think about you, thinking they’re saying it aloud.”
“So whatever we decide to do about Kallessin, we need to do sooner rather than later?”
“That’s exactly what I’m saying.” Sol paused. He didn’t really want to say the next part to a friend of Halsen, but he did anyway. “Perhaps we don’t need to tell Halsen about this. He’s a bit… rigid when it comes to rules. Kallessin can’t change what he is. But as long as doesn’t abuse his powers, they won’t hurt anyone. But Halsen…”
Tateh finished for him. “Halsen might not care that Kallessin can’t change. He would just view it as practicing a forbidden art.” Tateh finished his tea in a long gulp. “Halsen will be back in two months. We have until then to help Kallessin get it under control. You want to tell him?”
“Give it a couple days. I’m pretty sure I found something about Listening hidden in the stacks in the library a couple years ago. Let me see if I can dig it up again.” Sol rose and limped for the door. “And Tateh? One last thing.”
“hmm?”

Once apon a time, their was a little girl who always wanted a pony but their family was not very rich and she saved all her money to buy one. She would save her birthday money and christmas money and her tooth fairy money to save up to get one. When she finally got the money their family was very happy for her. The next problem was where was she going to put it? She asked her neighbors which had always been nice to her said yes. She then decided to buy her dream pony and brushes him everyday and spoils him with lots of love. The mother and father were afraid they could not keep the pony because they could hardly not keep the food on the table. The neighborhood helped out though and donated them stuff to get by. When the girl was old enough to get a job she got one and started working. She moved a block away from her parents and kept her old pony. She never forgot the memories of when she used to ride him and give him kisses and cuddles and still does. She got him a friend so he wouldn't be lonely when she went to work. Now she has two horses and a great family and wonderful memories to share. She now helps kids just like her. She is proud of how she is helping others and others are proud of her too. The End.

We're gonna see if this works (probably won't, lol).
I painted this lady in acrylics. She's a flaxen liver chestnut, splash frame appy. She doesn't much show her appy, minus her muzzle and skin around her eyes.
**Scratch that. It doesn't work. I hate my life... lolLove,
