How do you organize your lines?
  • So I would like to hear how everyone organizes their lines so I can get some ideas! Right now I'm not sure if I should get barns for each line or not. But I have quite a few lines I would like to start so seeing what others do might help give me ideas :)
  • Right now I have 2 lines and 2 side projects. Each has a prefix.
    HT1: even line
    HTX: even side project
    uG: bootstrappers
    uGNx: bootstrap side project.

Aging up even mares and a few older ones I use for straw breedings (HT1/HTX) are in a 60-stall barn, and most of the breeding age mares hang out in the pasture. The bootstrappers (uG/uGNx) have a 90-stall barn and get shoved in the pasture as I have room. Foundie mares have their own 120-stall barn. This system works for me right now because I have enough pasture space, and also because I cull hard and try not to stuff my barns. I also have a bunch of 210-stall barns that are full of show horses right now, so they can be moved to 1000 stall barns as I get them to make room for more breeders.

I like the system of dividing by line because it makes it easy to use straws. Depending on what kind of straw I have (foundation, lined, or bootstrap), I can go to that barn, hit "view in search," and deselect "bred this year" to easily find a mare. I could jsut as easily do this using my prefix system, though.

I also am primarily a pasture breeder, so except for my bootstrap barn, my breeding barns aren't as important a source of organization for me.

  • So, I am still a small barn in scale of things, but I figured I'd share just for perspective. Currently, most of my breeding mares live in pastures. I have one for my main line of riding horses, and one for my bootstrap line. My Christmas present to myself was a new pasture, so my small 10 horse bonus pasture is currently for currently for 2G breeding. (it used to rotate whatever I was focusing on that month - it's been kitm, pearl, and now 2G for April.) Mares get swapped around pastures as needed.

I currently have one barn for underage intacts - all my intact foals under age three. They show until they go to pastures and/or get spelded and join the main show barns. Both my boostrap and my main line get mixed in there - it's pretty easy to tell by pt score which line they belong to as this point, plus I'm testing out a different naming convention for the different lines.

My ice and Nexus breeders have a barn to themselves. They're my "fun" barn, so where I'm less worried about quality and more focused on color, so I limit myself to just that barn.

My stallions - main line, bootstrap, underage replacements, hang out in my 15 stall bonus barn. That forces me to be aware of how many breeders I'm keeping and really figure out what I want. As I get more space, I may relax that rule, but it's been helpful in maintaining my intact/speld ratio thus far.

My primary barn has miscellaneous mares that don't fit my main lines, but I can't bring myself to spay. Some are rank specials, some just turn out pretty babies, some I got after they had already leveled off, so the spay bonus won't do much. I had breed them for auction fodder or show ponies. Keeping the number of horses low in that barn allows me to buy/sell/trade horses and have a place to sort my foals when they come in from pasture.

My single barn for underage intacts won't work for much longer just due to how many foals I'm getting per month now, so I'm interested in seeing what others do.

  • Thank you guys! Most of my breeding mares are rank specials or exceptional producers, which I want to build a herd of once i get a barn for them. My bootstrap line is HUGE so I've got to find a way to trim that back, probably eliminate as I breed whether I get mares or studs. I need to get a huge barn but not sure how long that will take =)) I was thinking maybe 60 stall barns for each line (mostly fantasy genes) I'm finally getting serious though and having a hard time organizing!
  • I was trying to add a whole bunch of genes in but with wanting to do actual lines now I dont see why I actually have to do that anymore =))
  • So I have three actual lines and my bootstrap line. My pastures are divided into bootstrap Blue and Gold, then foundation for X,Y,Z line and Gen 2 for X, Y, Z line. My barns are separated by paper levels for my bootstrap mares (one 120 horse barn each for blue and gold paper), my spare foundation mares have a 90 stall barn, and then my even lines get tossed together into a 120 stall barn for second gen, and a 120 stall barn for third gen. I really need to go through my bootstrap mares and cull/snip some, but I have this awful “but they are pretty and I might want them later” problem.

  • Thank you Fallen! Yeah I'm going through and snipping anything below yellow for my bootstrap line right now. I'm thinking 60 stall barns for my regular lines to start with, then go from there. My bootstrap line needs to be brought down to about 50 so I'm not sure how I'll manage that one!

Edited* I had just enough blue/gold mares that I wanted to keep to make a solid 50 for my bootstrap line!
  • lol It's always a struggle. Feel free to have a quick look at my barns and pastures, they are pretty self explanatory. I won't have any more than 30 mares past G2, per line or it becomes too overwhelming. It also makes sure that I have the BEST 30 mares per line. Good luck :)

  • A few years ago I was thinking about quitting. I didn’t have very clear directions and most of my breeding stock was aging out and I wasn’t breeding them more than a handful of times. I decided to go through my herds (hj1 & 2) and make a list of the genes I have and rank them according to how much I like them. The top 2 on each server would become my new line directions to concentrate on.

I picked Nexus and KP on hj1. Ice and satin here.

Technically I still have 3 lines each. I still have all the other old genes in what I call my filler herd. The one I use to top up the numbers in the main 2 lines so that I have more het horses in the next generation.

Since then my ice line has grown but I’m still not really satisfied with where I am as it’s very behind the numbers of my HJ1 herds. My satin is still there but sparse.

On HJ1 tho my lines have exploded and grown to include Axiom and plaid lines.

I think my main organization tip is prefixes lol

I use a bunch but only use 5 spaces at the front of the name and 2 behind. Which tell me gender, generation and which line. I’m considering moving the secondary line marking to the front of the name to make it easier to sort.

Currently my main lines have the prefixes of NX, AX, PL, IC at the beginning of the name after the gender/generation prefix.

My secondary lines have KP/kp or Sa at the end of their names but you have to work a little to sort through everything else to pick them out.

I keep what I can in the pastures but the rest are all sorted into barns by generation. Each barn gets its own 210 (this side still has a mix of sizes since the numbers are still small and I’m not filling it up and needing more space.) show horses are all in 1000 stall barns that they pay for by the time I need the next one.

I can go to any barn or pull up a search and narrow it down to a single generation of any line quicky and efficiently. I also try to cull hard when I can (I don’t have a lot of data or access to a computer so it’s harder now just on my phone but I do enjoy snipping and don’t keep mind cutting a lot out

  • All my lines have silver, DP and Kp, which makes crossing them a bit easier. I keep Mushroom and Chinchilla as separate lines, the warps/nexus/axioms are sort of separate, and I have a mixed ice/watercolour line I suppose you'd call it. I don't bother organising barns much, other than spay/gelds are all in the big show barns, and mares mostly in a couple of others, but I don't get to fussed about it. I'd never find them in the big barns anyway so reply on prefix and suffix use, so can search by generation etc
However I do have quite a lot of organisation in my pastures because I breed even generations. This is so I can if I wish put in a suitable stallion to breed all in that pasture. They aren't so much organised on colour, they are in separate pastures according to their generation, and era. They are also all named for generation and era to make things easier for me. Plus I might add one of their important colours as a suffix, again just to make better stallion/mare pairings. I often breed small groups in an empty pasture anyway, so the prefix and suffix use makes them easier to find in the drop down menus

  • I keep a barn for each generation of each line. A couple are grouped together in higher generation because of low numbers. All stallions are kept together with a line name prefix.

  • I like to see what comes out when I combine genes, so I really don't have a lot that I focus specifically on. I'm trying to make a line of hom Axiom/Thunderstruck, Wrong Warp/Axom-Nexus/Thunderstruck, Chinchilla/Watercolor and any and all combos of the ice genes. I also like Ice14/het Axiom-Nexus/Watercolor. I'm also a sucker for w10 and black livers, so I have a bunch of stuff. I usually stick a bunch of mares in with a stud and see what comes up. :)

  • I have multiple accounts to keep my lines separate, I'm wanting to do a couple merges, but each one has a mind of its own. (And the longer I wait the more they cost)

In general though, I label evens with G# and uneven with Upaper level. I also list special or warning genes so they are easier to sort/hand breed. All of my accounts have 2 pastures so i can move mares without losing bonus.

I haven't done a mare cull in 2 months, so I know i need to get on that when I have a day off, but by keeping my studs in the primary barn I can see them all at once to do a monthly cull towards perfection.

I started with bootstrapping in several places, but as my generations fill out I'm slowly getting rid of reds from the uneven group. With an eye on being all even by the end of summer.

  • All my lines can be inter-crossed. I try to keep regular and wild bay and non-sooty out of all my breeding horses. This way I can breed my brown, black and liver lines together.
I arrange them by generation - so all horses will have the prefix 2G etc (if I did not breed them they are G2 etc). Because I use a lot of frame and white spotting I then prefix with FR or W as I want to avoid lethal foals.
My pastures are all labelled by generation too.
I do have an Intact Show Mare barn with lots of mares who don't fit my requirements that I really should be speying but can't bring myself to. And I have bootstrap barns - those girls have been moved out of pasture as I don't have enough space.
I need to sort through all my girls - I have way too many, but I love breeding. The vast majority of my mares are in barns and I would much prefer them all to be in pastures.

  • I'm super new to the game (only been playing 4 real life months now) but I've been using my pastures as a way to sort my herd. I have 3 pastures, and label each with the stallion I'll be using for them that season. I also have a ton of spreadsheets denoting the foal quality, so I can track which pairings were better and which were not ideal. I also have spreadsheets to track which horses have which traits, so I can look at them and make decisions on breeding pairs without having to draw up the horses themselves. It makes it really easy since I'm trying to breed out e in my lines, and trying to get all aa horses.

Thus far, barn-wise, I've just been sorting intact vs show horses, though I've officially run out of room in my show barns, so everything is just kind of a mess until I buy another, larger show barn to keep all my show horses in.

  • Thank you everyone! I am working on building my exceptional producers so I can have more mares that fit my special gene studs! Most of them are exceptional producers but I do have 2-3 c papered so I use my yellow papered rank specials! I took a minute out of organizing baby cloths and removing preemie stuff to read all of this and I love all these ideas!
