Opinions (Sire quality)

I have this boy whom I like quite a bit
4G GMT 3627700
I am starting to get quite strict on my comparison testing. This boy is not only worse than my current benchmark (who is a high A that is AGA a star), but he is also worse than my old benchmark. Who is AGA as the new benchmark, but is worse than a star. So long story short, I would estimate at least 3% lag of where I want him to be. If he was AGA the old benchmark I would consider boosting him.
Not only is he a pretty face, but he is my only 4G colt with mushroom. And I only have 4 3G colts. So basically a very valuable gene to me at these gens as I love competing for first star. (not that anyone is looking).
He did pass SBA, but his sire is about 1%-2% behind the rest of my stallions, but I gave him a break as he had kitm, is an old favorite, and he's old and will age out soon anyway. So he could be even more than 5% behind what I am looking for. So boosting is not guaranteed. And even if it was guaranteed, and I make a big show bonus, I would rather have the money for my next barn. Or making other colts mare. Or GMT tweaks... Or whatever.
I don't think that I would get another horse quite like him even if I did get another mushroom, as even if his sire does hold on another season, he tests worse than what I require now, so most likely I am not going to let him get any more pastures. Sorry bud, love you Brag Worthy.
Also, his mom has a good chance of being a really low blue as well. I now require A at 2G, and her sire didn't even pass SBA. OOps. Same with her mom. Although she still is a blue, and I still have tons of 3G reds.
So as I see it, I have 3 options.
1.) Auction him/sell him (as I can't stand to straight up geld him).
2.) Use him in the show herd as a stallion
- He has over 3 in weight which is something I have been looking for
- He is pretty
-Still compete for first mushroom star (Although kinda feels like cheating, although, I have been trying to get mushroom in the show herd, and ended up using all of the covers on my favorite 2G mushroom stud. Oops.)
-Have tons of A papered show stallions I never use anyway. Wanting to use superior to low star stallions to boost quality as I have been mostly chasing color. (My show line isn't supposed to have rules though. )
-Don't know if this is a con because I don't want to compromise on my morals, or a pro as I have more options, but I betcha I could still sneak him some full pasture bonus 4G mares, and the breeding police won't come after me. And who knows, maybe with a bit of luck he would still hit my 5G star goal. But no matter what I am fine with 5G blue mares, so he could effectively be a "broodmare" sire.
3.) Make him a mare.
-Still somewhat expensive
-Still chase after 5G mushrooms
-Maybe people would want eggs?
-NEVER have enough mares anyway
(I don't have an issue with extreme mare lag. I am always cool with more show ponies, or auction fodder)
Anyone have a take on what you would do?
One last thing, he is also a possible KP carrier. What scenarios do you think it would be worth it to double check on that with a GMT? Both the show line and the even lines have that. So I could get that from other stallions of both, but you can still never have too much KP in my opinion.Breeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses.

I’m honestly not knowledgeable on the breeding aspect of it, but it seems to make sense to reassign him as a mare and keep him in the herd to get more mushroom into your flock, and continue to breed her with consistent, quality stallions to garner more mu foals with higher quality?

I'm quite brutal with my own lines, so don't take it to heart too much. He is pretty but I get so many pretties I don't really let that play too important a role unless I have equal quality horses I need to cull down to a manageable amount. Then I take the pretties over the plain babies.
So I would either;
* Give him a 5% boost (pricey)
* Geld him
* Boost him by 1% and make him a mare (also pricey).
If you know his sire is also lagging behind, I'd probably geld him too.
I have a gorgeous 3g benchmark mushroom stallion I can sell you straws of if you want? You'd have to breed to a mare with agouti brown and white m but you'd get a very similar match to this boy of yours.#4519 -
Yea... Not sure why I let Brag Worthy get a pasture. He is 18 this year. Definitely a sentimental one. Although I cloned and boosted his sire, and he is up to quality now.
I think that boosting is a good option. Would we have any way to be able to tell that a 5% was enough? Usually when I want to boost someone I get not even halfway and have to get up. The only two times I have been successful was through help AND fundraising....
Maybe I should try to get another 4G colt next season then if I fail try boosting.
I would love straws from you boy! Yes please. Or I don't know how much you would want to maybe lease him for a season, or even just a day.Breeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses.

I guess there's no for sure way to know but the few times I've done it it's been the the right choice. Have you tested him to your 4g's benchmark sire opposed to his own sire? If he's as good as that 3g stallion it's probably not worth it. If he's better then you know he's not too far off reaching your 4g boys, the 5% boost might bring him up to snuff.
I can definitely lease him for a few days if you've got mares in pasture for him :) I've managed to breed all the mares this year and he's still got plenty of breedings!

I think it doesn't hurt to try! I can still as you said make him a mare if he's still not enough.
Cheers owns my new benchmark's sire, and my old benchmark's sire was actually only AGA a 2G A, but he had a lucky day with pasture bonus and a high mare. But I guess I should double check that he is at least sup to a 2G A. If he's not we're in trouble. lol.
I don't have any 3G mares left unbred this year, but I would have some more het. mushroom mares aging up next season too, if you would be able to let me borrow him next season. Thank you so much he is GORGEOUS. I would put some mares into pasture now so that they would have a good amount of time when he was ready.Breeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses.

Give it a go, you never know it might be all you need :) And absolutely, shoot me a message next season!#4519
