Question about fantasy genes and transferring
  • Hello all,

I am in the process of acquiring a large # of horses to start the foundation of my herd (focusing on breeding for sm/m appaloosa ponies in the future but not culling anything now since numbers need to increase) and have been fortunate to get some relatively good stock for a beginner :-) (I hope so!)

I am trying to get some G2 and G3 stock in preparation for when my G2 foals age up (if I can get any dang babies to pass the tests- so much for that exceptional producer moniker). I might have the opportunity to acquire a chinchilla foal and I understand because I do not own the license for chinchilla, the foal's chinchilla gene will not "transfer". My ? is if I eventually purchase the chinchilla license, will the foal's genes "reactivate"? Or must I have the license BEFORE the purchase so the foal doesn't lose its chinchilla gene? I hope this made sense and thank you in advance for any help!

  • If you do not own a license, you cannot own an intact horse with that gene. No matter what you do the game will not let you buy that foal until you get a license or the foal is altered. It's genetics won't change at all, nothing will go "dormant". You just won't be able to buy it

  • First of all, welcome to the game! I highly recommend joining the Beginners Barn Buddy Chat, even if just to hang around. There is almost always a seasoned or veteran player that can answer questions for you and help.

As for your chinchilla question, no the gene will not become reactive after you purchase the license. You must own the license before owning any intact stock. You may own altered chinchilla horses for show ponies though. I’m not sure what you mean by the gene will not transfer. The gene will be on the horse whether intact or altered, it’s just a matter of breedability. And I urge you to also acquire show ponies, as they are your money makers and will fund your breeding.
  • I gotcha! Guess I'll just have to wait on adding the chinchilla genes later once I get going :-) Thank you for the clarification ObsidianKitsune and FallenShadows!

To clarify, I didn't realize that you would not have the option to purchase any stock that had a gene you didn't hold a license for.. I had just assumed that if you purchased stock with the fantasy gene it would "turn" off. Now that I typed that out, I see how silly the question was haha.. you can't turn genes on and off just because a player might not have a license!

Thank you for the recommendation FallenShadows and thanks for the welcome! I will check out the beginner chat. I am also in process of acquiring some cheap show ponies.. just got afflicted by SPS (Shiny Pony Syndrome) baaaad egads!
  • It's fine, we were all new once and didn't know how things worked!

  • ObsidianKitsune, speaking of new, may I message you a question? I now realize after reading through a lot of the forums, I have been going all around this completely backwards and am trying to shift my priorities to building a show herd (and boost my daily income). I just want to see if the plan I have put in place is feasible or worthy of a facepalm :-)
  • Of course, I'd be happy to help!

  • @TheFoggyMoors, if you're interested in show ponies I have a bunch of altered yearlings (some with fantasy genes) that I can sell you cheaply.
  • If you want show horses, instead of buying youngsters which don't have any points yet, you can also either create them, as new creates come with points until you reach I think a max of 20,000 overall points. Or just search the sale boards, putting all time points as the selection criteria, some will cost too much, and some will be old, but still a good way to pick up some horses with points to boost up your daily HBs!

  • @NowandForever, I would be interested! I'll direct message you in a second!

@Kintata, thank you so much for the explanation! I will be doing that and trawling the auctions as well! Thank you again for taking the time to reach out!
  • I always hit up the auctions for pointed horses (use the search page and sort by all time points and then put 2,600hbs bid down on every horse starting from the top of the list. If they already have a bid skip them. I go until I run out of money to bid. If I can I come back and continue down the list from where I started as the higher pointed horses get more bids on them.) I also stop once I start to reach horses that have less points than my current cut off.

You’ll win some and loose a lot at first but after the auction runs I tend to spay or geld everything I won and toss them in the show barns. Since I don’t have a lot of room I will sort my horses by total points and send anything left in my primary barn to the next auction and continue the cycle. This way my total horses stay around the same but my total points will increase and my cut off will raise.
  • Another way to pull up your show bonus is to hit the auctions later in the month sorted by "points this year". That gives you the horses who are currently earning a lot of points, so even if they aren't highest on all-time points they are likely to grow their daily income fairly well. It's not foolproof, but it's worked well for me. :)
