Shetland ponies...classified as cobs or sport ponies?
  • I am wanting to make a line strictly based off of Shetlands. I had one and ahe was a sturdy little thing. I really don't know if they would be more classified as cobs or sport ponies? What do you think?
  • I'd more say cob, with a really small tendency of sport. Mostly because most Shetlands I've seen look like little drafts, but some do vary.

  • They are kind of in the middle between the sports pony and cob, not quite as heavy as cobs though, and they don't have nearly as much feather as cobs either.

  • From what I've seen, the feathering on the cobs on here (without the big floof pack) is about what Shetlands have in real life. They're just smaller all around than a cob.

  • In real life, shetland ponies are shorter than we can get in the game. Depending on the registry, maximum height is 10.2 to 11.2 hands. our minimum height is 12 hands. American shetlands are less "cobby" than British shetlands.

I'd say that trying for the shortest sport ponies you can get would be one way to go.

This might be the look you're wanting.

    This one is 12.0 hands.

    Here's a 12.1 cob. Rather feathery.

Our pony images are a little long-backed for shetlands as well as too tall, but you might be able to come pretty close.

This girl is the closest to the amount of feather a draft has, but she has more feather than the vast majority of Shetland ponies and certainly the most out of the 13 I have/had.

I can't get the photos to work as I'm not on my laptop atm but all the photos are public on facebook so you should be able to see them.

  • The Shetlands I've known (in the US) have the round body that we sort of associate with the cob shape, but their legs and feet are definitely more like a sport pony in weight. Also, here in California, especially in the summer, they had much sleeker coats than you see in other parts of the world (or in NorthernStars' photo above), which also lends more to the sport pony look.

I think YMMV and it's a matter of personal preference, since we don't really have a close match in game.
  • Basically we need a bone weight labled "Little Furry Potato with Attitude".

  • I’m dying, BlackWyld that is a perfect description! Although that could go for many ponies, and definitely the minis. I haven’t ever met a sweet mini.

  • I love that saying.

I think my mini is literally the ONLY sweet mini. I'm not even joking. I don't think she could hurt a dern fly. Though, she refuses to use a halter, she hates it on her nose, and just fights it, so we use a dog collar. Lol

  • I was just wishing we had a “mini” size the other day. Angry, hairy, potato sounds perfect.

  • So should I make them cobs?
  • They look more like fat sports ponies - the curly manes/tails work - they don't have a lot of bone. Cob legs just don't look right for shetlands.
I have a minicob and he looks fine as a cob (in the game) but the shetlands in our field next door would not. PS I'm in England.
    Love BlackWyld's description :D
Breeding brown/liver/black with white spotting drafts. If you ever fancy straws PM me. PM me if you need help with GE.
  • I love the idea of putting the curly many and tail on the sports! Really adds to the look. :D

  • I think I would do tiny cobs! I created this little mush and I think I might just go back to my old line of leopard apps.

  • Really depends on if you want UK Shetlands or American. Your UK ones look more cob type, but American are more riding pony or sport type.
  • here is a side by side comparison

  • I think I want to base them off of the UK Shetlands.
