Defying the odds!
  • So it's been a bit of a rough start but despite issues the girls are thriving! I'm super proud of them. They weaned Hazel off the machine that was breathing for her if she forgot. They are both only on cpap now to keep their lungs open and that was turned down to 5. Which means within the next few days they won't need it at all, the next step is it coming off! They are jaundiced but Sophia is already off the lights, Hazel needs a few more days at least. Their heat was turned down a little bit and they are maintaining very well. I finally got to do skin to skin with Sophia because her umbilical line is out and a PIC line is in. They think Hazel will be bottle feeding by Thursday which is amazing! My milk is finally in and it's not huge amounts yet but it's there and I'm providing for them! If they keep going this way I could have them home alot sooner than I thought. I'm healing well from my c-section, even though I tend to ignore my pain to spend time with my babies and end up paying for it later. I will be discharged later today and I'm not looking forward to it even though I will be spending the majority of the time with them still. Now that they are stabilizing I can finally say it. Sophia shouldn't be alive. Her cord was in really bad shape. It was 3x thinner than Hazel's, it was see through. When they showed it to me I thought it was part of the thin membrane that divided them. Doctors say it's a miracle that shes alive let alone made it to a seemingly very healthy 32 weeks. Its guaranteed that she wouldnt have made it to 34 weeks like a dr was pushing for and I did a good thing by pushing for 32, she wouldnt have lasted even a few more days. I have very good mommy instincts. I knew something was wrong even when people doubted me. I'm still kind of wrapping my mind around the fact that they are really here and they are really mine. It's like it's a dream and I'm waiting for it to be snatched away when I wake up. =))
  • That is miraculous! Your girls are fighters from the start.

  • That is a miracle. My youngest was born dead and they revived him. It was touch and go for a while but he also started thriving. I also got discharged before my youngest did. I am so glad that both if your babies are doing well. My youngest is now 12 years old. Even though I can't have any more children of my own I am very thankful for the 2 boys that I have.
  • So glad to hear the good news! Go Sophia and Hazel!
  • I’m glad you and the girls are all doing well! Tell them to keep up the great work!

  • Learning not to ignore your own needs is a huge part of being mommy. They need you to heal right now while there is a team of nurses to help. Soon enough they will need you at your best. I'm so proud of you and your girls. You all survived a harrowing, if normal, ordeal. Drink your water and feel loved.

  • Thank you guys! I've now officially got to do skin to skin with both girls and it's the only time I feel like I could actually sleep. I was discharged yesterday and the state of the apartment is making me anxious. Nothing is ready
  • Not everything needs to be done at once. Take your time getting things ready. Concentrate on the most important things--places for your girls to sleep, a changing table or other option, clothes for them. Make sure you get enough rest every day.

I decided to get a second hand three drawer dresser that was the right height for changing babies and give it a padded topper so that the surface was soft. That gave me lots of room in the drawers for clothing and other baby needs without needing a different piece of furniture. My daughter (now in her 40's) still has that dresser in her bedroom. *G*
