Mushroom gene question.
-
What exactly does the mushroom gene do? I'm debating on adding mushroom to this guy.

Its a darkening gene, I believe.
"This real life gene is a dilution found in shetland horses. It causes a reduction in only red pigment while leaving black pigment intact." -
I’m not sure you will see a ton of change to him, since he’s a black base. Here is my Freaky Friday lady, a liver, who I just added it to for example

And here is the official release post about it, lots of examples in there

What it does is dilute the red pigment in the horse's hair when it's homozygous recessive. It doesn't do anything to black hair.
Here's my chestnut homozygous mushroom foundation sire.

Because your boy's hair has already been diluted from his homozygous pearl, the mushroom may lighten his coat and mane and tail further.De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."

Here is my chocolate palomino pearl Hidden Gates RS with the Mushroom gene. He's definitely not as dark as my liver Mushroom stallions

Thanks everyone. I'm not too worried about how much it will change his color. @FallenShadows714 that link was very helpful. :-) I'm more curious what it will do for his foals.
-
Against the odds, it wont really do anything unless its homozygous :)
-
Exactly what MariaChapinFarm said, it will not do anything to the foals unless they are homozygous for the mushroom gene.
-
If this stud where hom mushroom his foal will be het right? So if I get an other hom stud and cross with this guys foals I could then get hom babies?
-
You would still have to wait to third gen to get hom if you want hom at second gen you could get a mare to go with the stallion or find someone to sell eggs or get a mare and not the stallion as straws are easy and cheaper to get
-
1st gen: sire--mumu x dam--MuMu = foal muMu every time
2nd gen: sire--muMu x dam--muMu = 25% chance mumu foal. 50% chance muMu or Mumu foal. 25% chance MUMU foal. This ratio holds for every foal, every breeding. It doesn't mean that if you breed 4 foals, 1 will be homozygous mushroom, 2 will be heterozygous mushroom, and 1 will be homozygous no mushroom.
3rd gen: select mumu sires to cross with mumu dams: results will be the start of a line of guaranteed mushroom foals.De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."

I decided to add it and make a few more changes. If only his brindle still showed.
