    Are all Cherry Drop horses hom DP, or are some of them het?

    I am still pretty confused about DP and only recently came across a thread saying that horses don't have to have sooty to have DP (which I thought WAS necessary). I have a perlino Cherry Drop with no sooty...so is she still hom DP (because that was the whole point of the Cherry Drops was to give us the hom DP in a foundation)?

    My Cherry Drop. I've done a little work to him. I added 2 sootys and splash, because I love them dark with chrome :x

    They have to have sooty _and_ DP ( in varying combinations, they need at least three of the four possible alleles) to be Liver or Chocolate. But it's similar to appaloosa - a horse can have PATN1 and/or ECA3P+ but they won't express appaloosa characteristics unless they also have Llp to "switch it on". The big difference is that DP and sooty do affect coat color on their own, it's only Liver/Chocolate that requires both.
