Funky Foal Colours- A study of Silver and DP?
  • Just thought I'd post these guys because they are a bit interesting- feel free to guess which is which if you'd like. There's two Silver Blacks, a Silver Smokey Black and a Chocolate Palomino in this mix.

  • I was told you cant tell if a silver black (or black based horse) has DP.
Well unless you know there was DP in their line or they produced a dp foal.
Though some silver blacks do look like choc palominos! :D

  • It's cool seeing all those colours together. I just checked and I guessed them all right xD
  • @ParadisePark on Silver blacks, I'm pretty sure DP does have an effect :) Since DP acts on red pigment and silver 'increases' the amount of red pigment in a horse's coat colour, the DP can then have a visible effect. I think these guys are also exaggerated by the Sty+ since it seems to like to concentrate the 'red' lol

  • Ah okay!
I made a post ages ago asking about it, Obsidian said DP works on the red pigment so then if a horse is black you can not tell if they are DP.
Ammit then advised to breed them to a know no DP chestnut (so a hom sooty) to see of they carry DP.
That's why I was under the impression you couldn't tell :P

  • Yeah and usually you're 100% right, its just the addition of the silver which changes its interactions a little bit :) Its basically the same reason why you can spot DP in bays and buckskins even though they are 'black based' coats. There is no way of telling if a black horse carries DP visually, if black is all they are, so no dilution genes :)
  • I love this version of silver!
