That's perfectly fine! At the top of the forum, you should see a blue bar with some words on it. There should be "Discussions", "Activity", "Inbox", "[Username]", and "Mark All Viewed". Click on "Inbox" and go to the right to press the button called "Start a New Conversation". Enter the person's name in the recipient box, click on their name to lock it in, and then type your message.

Alternatively, you can click on someone's name in the forum. It'll bring you to a separate page that gives you info about what they have posted. Just below that blue bar should be a "Send [username] A message."
