Does white factor affect appaloosas?
  • I'm wanting to work on making appaloosas with minimal-to-no white saddle on them, how would I go about doing that?

I know I'm wanting no PATN1 at all, but does White Factor affect saddle size too? What about being het appaloosa instead of hom?

Once I have entered horses into the auction, I do not remove them.
  • I do not think that white factor affects LP, but I could be wrong. I think there are a bunch of factors, some unseen, that go into creating appy coats with all their differences. Your best bet may be breeding horses that meet your requirements and hope for the best. As an example here are three Candy Appleloosas:
Number one is het Lp, no PATN, WF minimal

    1S1 Candy Appleloosa 3 m

Number two is het Lp, no PATN, WF none
    image
    1S1 Candy Appleloosa 1 m

Number three is get Lp, no PATN, WF minimal, but pretty loud compared to number one

    1S2 Candy Appleloosa 4 m
  • The third one Ripshin linked has w20 and the first two do not. Maybe that is what is making her blanket bigger?

  • I think I have seen that W20 does affect the blanket size. I've had two het appy het PATN1 horses, both roughly the same, but the one with w20 would have a bigger blanket. From what I've noticed, though.

On the look out for pointed creates
  • For example we've got this mare who is het PATN1. She's basically a pseudo-leopard. WF of medium with hom W20.

  • I have wondered that myself, but it only happens in some horses. I am going to use some First Snow horses this time.
Number one is het LP, no PATN, hom W20, WF light
    image
    1S2 First Snow 4 m

Number two is het LP, no PATN, het W20, WF minimal
    image
    1S1 First Snow 3 m

Number 3 is her LP, no PATN, no W20, WF none
    image
    1S2 First Snow 5 m

So the mare with no W20 and no white factor has a flashier blanket than the two with them.
  • P.S. This is why appaloosa makes me bang my head against a wall, but also why I love it so much.
  • White factor has no influence on LP. White factor is how "broken" the genes are, or how many Kit mutations, splash and/or frame mutations they have.

  • According to this post, the level of pigmentation in the base coat color affects spot size. Does that maybe extend to blanket size as well?

  • Not always, I have a couple double DP boys with very minimal blankets. lol

Took a lot of rerolls to get his this big!

And his 'blanket' disappears altogether most of the time if I reroll. lol

  • Hmm... Well, if rerolling doesn't dramatically change blanket size, then we know genetic factors do control it and it isn't random... not that it really would be anyways with the work Ammit puts into gene expression!

  • Rerolling does change it sometimes, but I think it's a complex combination behind the scenes. There's a range of spots and white possible on each appy, I think, some wider ranges than others. I've had it go from just on the hips to as far as the withers on a very few, but mostly it doesn't change that far. At least, not for me. lol I keep trying though, just to see what happens. :D
