Thinking about another GMT...
-
I've still got some time to play with Star Lord before he's too old, and I've started batting around the idea of replacing his w2 with w8, and maybe dropping w20 altogether. What do you guys think?

My personal opinion would be to swap the w20 with 8 but keep the w2, cause then you’ll be able to get both sorts from him. Plus, I think w2 and w8 look really cool together.

Okay, yes, definitely going to consider that. Those look awesomeID: 45055

You could always add kit promoter to him, if that is something you like. Just remember he would need two kit genes in addition to the two kp genes,

I would do what LallyHop suggested. W8 is safe with itself, although moderate risk with W2. Your boy have minimal WF though so as long as you keep that down in the line and don't add any splash or frame you should be fineProducer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.

Would there be any chance of killing the stallion by adding W8 to an already existing W2? If so it's not worth it, no matter how cool the result. I'd rather just drop the W2 than risk losing him.ID: 45055

You can't lose an already existing horse. However w2 is somewhat risky (although very pretty). If you cross his offspring together than there would be some risk. I don't think w8 is hardly risky at all though so I think you'd be good. As someone said just watch white factors.Breeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses.

W2 and W8 together hit moderate risk on the kit factor chart, so you might have to be very careful with mares.

If its moderate risk then chances are grandbabies might start having issues. Do you normally breed half siblings togher to attempt to get a similar appearance as sire, or do you have multiple lines?Breeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses.

I am planning on doing some inbreeding further down the line, but those plans also include flushing eggs from mares, so with 8-14 foals per mare it won't be a dealbreaker if I end up losing a few foals to lethal gene combinations. My main concern was not losing my stallion, as I wasn't sure if there was a risk from doing something "lethal" while using the GMT :).ID: 45055

You can gmt lethal genes onto a horse. As a matter of fact you can cross two het frame horses and gmt their foal hom frame! Hom frame is always lethal too so so long as a horse isn't BORN with lethal genes, it'll stick around in the game until it ages out.
W2 is a rather risky gene to play with. Even crossing his progeny could result in dead babies. Read the link that JustaSaddleTramp posted. But here are the main points if you're breeding risky crosses:
1. Keep splash and frame out of the line. This raises the WF. W20, which you have on your boy, can also raise it. Basic rule of thumb: More white on a horse = more WF (excludes appy)
2. Choose mares with a lowish WF. I would look for a WF of None or Minimal, however the odd Light should be fine.
3. Refer to the link when doing a cross. If you do so enough times you'd remember most off by heart.
4. Lethal kit mutations only occur when a foal is Hom for kit genes (has 2) and has a high enough WF. If you breed your boy to mares who have no kit genes, there is no chance of a lethal cross.Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.

By the way! Since you went with the w2 w8 combo, sign me up for some straws when he’s of age! I absolutely love how he turned out :)ID 45703 | he/himOpen barn policy - no closed lines! I'm always selling straws and eggs from anything I have that catches your eye, don't hesitate to PM me and ask!
