Kit Promoter
-
Hey there, I was wondering about what the Kit Promoter GMT is about. Can anyone show n tell about it? I'm about to dive into GMTing soon
-
Kit Promoter, KP, makes clouded patches on the horses' coats - as if you randomly sponged them with milk paint. They must have two KIT mutations and be homozygous KP for it to express.

If you did chose to GMT it on a Stud, it will help if the mares you have the pasture have two Kit genes.BlueJumpingBean 28718

Does it work for any kit genes or just the promoter?
-
It isn't either/or, but and: to show the patches, a horse must have two Kit mutation genes (any two as long as they don't have plain Kit) and two Kit Promoter genes.More power!

Before spending any money on GMTing the best thing to do is go to the search and look up different genetic combinations and find what you like best and look up the prices to see how much it’s going to cost to adjust a horse you have to what you want. GMT starts expensive and gets even more so very quickly

Thanks much for the info! @Riley1119, that's a really good idea. I've been saving my hbs, and figured I'd ask for advice, being as GMTing looks quite costly. I may hold off on that for awhile.

Also, Kit Promoter is one of several untestable genes--that is, it doesn't show up in the gene test, so if you decide to breed for it, you'll need to have a way to identify the heterozygous ones that are foals from a homozygous KP parent.De gustibus non disputandum.
