Could this mare throw me my dream of a black foal with white or silver mane and tail? If so what should I cross her with? Any help would be greatly appreciated. The dapples staying would be great..

Well there is no such thing as a pure black with a white mane and tail. So is there a something close to what you are looking for you could give as an example for what genetics you want?

You could maybe try silver black that's also homozygous sooty? That would at least limit the diluting effect of the silver wouldn't it? It still wouldn't be black, like a black horse without silver but maybe darker than the mare you have now?

Edit- Does DP have an effect on black horses with silver? My initial thought is no it doesn't since it doesn't have any effect on 'regular' black, but then I was wondering if it might due to the dilution of the silver. Any insight because I genuinely don't know lol

Yes. Silver gene dilutes black pigment and let's the red pigment be seen more.

Another way of nearly black and white is flaxen black liver:-

But the black horse with white mane I have not seen - you can get close with W2 on black (often gives white tail but not white mane) or you can play with frame:-

Otherwise your silver black is the closest you can get

I second the liver chestnut. The closest thing to black with white that I've ever seen in real life was a liver Morgan who looked black to the eye with pale champagne/'white gold' mane and tail.

I've seen a ton of posts asking about a black horse with white mane and tail! I thought I was the only kid with that fantasy! Guess it's a common thread among the horse crazy kids!

Ammit, maybe that could be the next fantasy gene! You'd make a fortune! : D

My silver blacks with DP get quite dark, but still not black with a white mane and tail!

I'd still be thinking that hom Sooty and hom DP sliver black would be the closet you'd get to black with a white mane and tail. I would have thought the flaxen black livers mane/tails were too dark, but they do provide a good alternative :)

A little late to the party here, but I was browsing gypsy vanners (I'm such a sucker for those manes) and found a silver dapple that looks dark grey. As I'm new to the genetics myself, I'm not sure what gene you would use to get it darker, but the mane is certainly very white in this one.

Well I got my white with black mane and tail! It may not be the official name but she fits the look.
