Question about HET genes
  • So I know, for example, if you breed a hom snowflake to a het snowflake you will have a 50/50% chance of getting a hom offspring.

In my situation, I have a foal out of a hom pearl and a hom KP. Does this automatically make the foal het pearl and het KP? Or is there a chance he didn't get either of those genes?

  • Yep, that automatically makes him het pearl and het KP, unless the other parent had a chance to pass on those genes in which case the foal could be hom.
  • Homozygous means that they have both copies of the gene, eg EE, AA, AtAt, ChCh, that kind of thing.

Heterozygous means that they only have ONE copy of that gene, eg Ee, AAt, Chch.

A homozygous horse would always pass on one copy of that gene, as they have no other gene to pass on. A heterozygous horse has a 50% chance of passing on the desired gene, like in the snowflake instance.
