Breeding Advice and Flight Temperments
  • A tale of two half brothers and a question about BA/SBA implications when inconsistency is involved.

The first colt, labeled with bip, was my Best in Pasture of my 7th generation pasture. He failed BA due to flighty temperament (Inconsistent pt score - I assume he must be very close to that dreaded "Very Inconsistent" marker) and ergo did not make it to the SBA level of testing. He papered at S**.

The second colt was the only foal in the pasture to pass BA and then also passed SBA and papered at S** but is also Inconsistent.

Just for curiosity's sake, I paid the GMT to ungeld the Best in Pasture and compared him to his half brother. Result was "As good as". I know that "as good as" is a range.

So despite the breeding advice test results, the Best in Pasture would be the better breeder than the colt that passed BA and SBA, because PT has no impact on breeding ability (other than consistency being a heritable trait), yes?

  • you might use another GMT to make your favorite completely consistent. You need to get that inconsistency out of your lines.

  • The way I understand it BIP would be the better colt. Inconsistency is a factor for SBA, so my guess is that is he was made perfectly consistent he would pass.

I know altering more inconsistent foals was a member request, but I am wondering if it is time to do away with that?
