New gray research!
-
From April this year: there are now 3 detected alleles. G1 is wild-type (no gray), G2 is slow gray with low risk of melanoma (rare) and G3 is faster gray with high risk of melanoma (the most common).
G3 has a triplication (section repeated 3 times) and G2 has a duplication (the same section repeated twice). The theory is that the triplication drives both the increased graying speed and the increase of melanoma risk. The section that is repeated in G2 and G3 is present once in G1 (wild-type/non-gray).

I’m so excited for what this means for breeders health testing grey horses :x we test for so many things already, being able to lessen risk of melanoma for greys is huge! I’m hoping it becomes very common and we get to have a lot more insight into the health of the grey horses in our daily livesContinuing my reign as the most annoying player on the forums and hgg’s favorite butch lesbian cowboy
