Culling Advice
-
Hi all
My show barns are starting to fill after spending 6 months piling in as many ponies as I can.
I appreciate there are lots of different methods of culling show herds.
For those who cull by total points/age, what are your cutoffs? It's been a while since I have done a decent tidying up so I cant remember what thresholds are best to keep.
Many thanks for any advice :)ID - 47350 (Most Licences) Breeding heavy. Carry it Forward Project - Snf, Kp, Dp, Df, Sa and Sb2. Welsh Dreams - Full of fantasies

I personally try my best to not sell anything before age 10. When I need space, I search for horses that are leveled off, not in a pasture, and sort them by earnings that year. I jump to the back, and start my cull from the last page (making sure to check they are leveled off).
I have had several horses that were lower on points through most of their life turn out to be fantastic showers in their 16+ years and end up earning me several ribbons and GMTs.~Purveyor of the finest riding horses in Rakia~

I never cull below 10 if they make it into a show barn. But I will start with 20 and older then work my way down to 17-19, then 14-16 sorted by total points and just start auctioning off the last page til it feels good. I usually stop at 14 to make sure everyone levels off, but I will go down to 12 if I had a really small rollover and need room for foals.45120

How many horses do you typically keep in show barns?

The only time I personally cull show horses is at 10. If they have under 500 points they go to auction. But i also lose/auction about as many as I put back into my barns.

I keep about 5000 show horses @oldcat. I stopped buying barns when Ammit spread the word amongst the big barns that 10k horses or more is too hard on the servers. So I run around 7k horses.45120

I'm at 560 show horses I guess I have room to collect more :-)

And plenty of time to do it. Keep in mind I've been here at least once a week since 2018 started.45120

@OldCat I have 5700 spelds in my barns at the moment. I would probably be at full capacity at around 6000.

Sorting by total points was the easiest way to cull show horses for years. Maybe it's time for me to catch up and start looking at the ones with lowest earnings per year. I've not really done much sorting with this, is it best to do it by 1yr at a time, or certain age groups? I've got 3 1k mixed barns then probably 10 210 barns which all have close age groups together.
I don't sell anything less than 10 years unless they've passed sba, then they go to auctions for breeding stock. I'm coming closer to my max capacity so I need to start setting some limits for my herd.
I've been really active in the futurity boards and currently have about 1200 youngsters. I need to decide what to start doing with them as they turn 6yrs old. (I'm producing an average of 200 per season)
I'm at 275k per day bonus at the moment! I bought a huge group of pointed foundations from the foundation rescue to fill a few barns last year so I am concerned about having a strong show herd ready for when those all roll over.ID - 47350 (Most Licences) Breeding heavy. As far as prioritizing what show horses to keep as foals, I have two categories.
13+ pt
10-11 pt
Anything else is extra. 13+ typically get me the most points overall. 10-11 pt have early points but taper off after they level off. There will always be exceptions to this rule, as it isn’t hard. But in general it’s what I found works with my show herd.
I have a hard 500 point line at 10. If they make it passes that, they get to stay until they die. I personally don’t have the time to sort more than that.
My first account makes around 1.4 million a day. My second account is 400k right now.

Maybe I need to pull a page from @pestilenttempest's book, cause my current experience sounds a lot closer to @Ellesmere022.45120
