Random Question of the Day: Horse Elevators and Fantastical Designs
-
How large would an elevator need be to lift horses between floors? The largest horse in the game currently is a 20hh draft with bone weight 4.75.
I'm just looking for basic bare-bones dimensions, not interested into getting into weight limits and stuff. I fell down that rabbit hole with a different question last night... let's just say I learned a lot about parking garages.Folly's Fantasies #43484 (she/her): Horses, straws, and eggs from my Doubleskunk tribute herd are always free. -
Now I want to know if the freight elevator at mall of america can lift a horse. Thanks for that.45120Thanked by 1FollysFantasies

Coming back to say the freight elevator at the mall of america has weight limit of 10,000 lbs and I'm pretty sure it's big enough for a horse having been inside.45120Thanked by 1FollysFantasies

Horses, even big drafts, are not particularly heavy compared to what freight elevators normally lift. I would imagine if you needed a horse elevator you would just use a one made for freight.Need to contact me? Read this first. Only send me a PM for PayPal issues or if I ask you to. I have no other input but to say that I love this conversation and I love this game :))
As a side note, I play DnD and currently have a Centaur cleric based off of a draft, and we have figured out that she probably weighs about 800kgs (she was stopping people opening a door by....sitting in front of it, so no strength check by me needed). Which I think is the limit for some normal human elevators?Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.

Ok, here's why I was asking. I've developed a floorplan for a 1,000-stall barn located at Arcadia Fantasia. (The image is gigantic, sorry, but so is the barn.)
This barn features 200 stalls per floor, with a "very reasonable" 5 floors. :D
A comment from a friend suggested that a barn this big would take forever to get in and out of, so I designed it in a U-shape, allowing for the maximum number of ground-floor access doors and for as many horses as possible to have a window to the outside. The diagram is laid out on a grid of 12'x12' squares.
This barn features 12 freight elevators (red E), 3 exterior ramps (think parking garage) that are ADA-compliant, and on each floor has 16 inside wash/grooming bays (blue W), 2 indoor 18m lunge rings (yellow), and dozens of utility spaces (gray U).
The central courtyard is a 264'x336' covered arena, which has room for some stadium seating.
Each stall is 12'x12', and for the purposes of this exercise any of the grid squares could be modified/combined for any purpose.
I realized after the fact that I didn't take support columns into account, so I'm probably losing a few stalls per floor for that, but hey--this is a fantasy project after all. :))
ETA - I've been down some absolutely fascinating rabbit holes with this project, including multi-floor live loads, flooring options, engineering specs, and ADA compliance specs.Folly's Fantasies #43484 (she/her): Horses, straws, and eggs from my Doubleskunk tribute herd are always free.Thanked by 1FeldingFields -
@ObsidianKitsune that's a great strategy!Folly's Fantasies #43484 (she/her): Horses, straws, and eggs from my Doubleskunk tribute herd are always free.

All of this brings up the question of should you be focusing on elevators or a ramps system at the ends of the building. I've seen some excellent documentaries on the ramp systems in ancient live stock places, and how effective it is at getting lots of animals up and down. You can also clear a whole floor quickly in case of fire. If you put up in the south wing and down in the north wing you avoid jams.45120Thanked by 1ObsidianKitsune

Hence the ramps on three sides of my building. :)
The ramps are 12’ wide, so not excessively close quarters for passing either. There’s more than horses that would use elevators, I’m thinking I need a floor or two of human living quarters above all of that. The elevators are just sort of a convenience.Folly's Fantasies #43484 (she/her): Horses, straws, and eggs from my Doubleskunk tribute herd are always free.
