Well, that didn’t work - breeding project is off to a rough start
-
I finally finished up my pair of GM foundations for my planned platinum line. Well, I flushed the mare and got twelve eggs. Out of the twelve foals, seven got snipped. Of the five intact foals that passed SBA, three were stallions and one was inconsistent. Are these normal numbers, or did I poorly select my foundation pair? The stud is a New Coke and the mare is a Pretzel Twist.
Here is the foal crop (I’m particularly bummed about the chimera):

And these are parents:

Those look like pretty normal numbers. Remember that lab breeding only carries a 15 days pasture-equivalent bonus, so you'll always get fewer intact foals than if you had pasture bred them. And I consistently see about 30% of my foals with inconsistent PT, regardless of parent consistency.Folly's Fantasies #43484 (she/her): Horses, straws, and eggs from my Doubleskunk tribute herd are always free.

@FolliesFantasies - thank you for your response! This is the first time I had flushed a mare and then used all the embryos with a single stallion… I did not quite know what to expect.

With lab breeding I never automatically BA test them. Too much is put in already with pulling eggs/straws and making/implanting embryos. I just plan to need to boost/maxout. Always PT and Breeding Inspection first so I know if I should boost/maxout a potentially important cross. If it looks close after inspection but the foal will need a lot of tweaking, then I might BA to save against the GMTing and comparison testing.
I only SBA 40 day pasture foals up to Gen 3. It's really hard to get intact foals with Gen 4 up in my lines. -
@Looper - thanks for that advice! I will do it that way next month.

5 out of 12 intact is actually REALLY good.Need to contact me? Read this first. Only send me a PM for PayPal issues or if I ask you to. Otherwise, make a forum post. You will get a better faster answer by making a post.
I sometimes get busy and miss things. If your private message, question, etc. gets missed please ping me so I can follow up with you. I am also always happy to explain or clarify. (HAJ does not have a customer service email, please send me a forum message! )

Don't forget that MOA is a thing now ;) With two ExPer/ Pro parents, odds are you can salvage any you'd like to keep intact. Gorgeous horses!
