Thoughts of a Newbie with Too Many Horses
-
I saw this section in the forums and thought I might share some thoughts, maybe get some feedback if people have time. I'm still reading forums each time I come in, trying to learn new things!
I joined the game in 2018, however I haven't touched it in ages and never got established as a player back then. I've kept a running list of things I've experienced recently, in no particular order. It's rather long, not sure if that's good or annoying... I'm really enjoying most aspects of the game, but I do already feel like I may not stay invested much longer because of some things noted below. If anyone wants to share their thoughts/goals, or link to posts where that info is available, that would be lovely. Thank you all in advance for taking the time to read this!
- I love that I never hurt for money. I'm not rolling in it to where I'm throwing it away, but I had no issue getting a show herd established. This was both a result of selling horses properly and the achievements.
- Love the $2 welcome package! Bought that in my first week.
- With the above, I feel the “genetic guide” under resources is far too basic, to the point of not being helpful.
- The Foundation Rescue REALLY needs to be linked somewhere, such as under “community”. It’s like it doesn’t exists until you accidently stumble across a mention of it in a forum.
- I appreciate that the “breeding advice” test is free – it would be disheartening to spend 1K just to have my new favorite horse gelded! The comparison test seems priced terribly high. I've considered that it might be so expensive because it's more useful to established players with high funds versus newbies.
- I think this is a combination of game design and player society, but I just love that crossbreeding is a positive thing! At first I was confused about the lack of breeds, so I just picked my favorite type and ran with it. While having true breeds certainly does work in other games, it’s a refreshing change to have types here instead, and to have it be perfectly reasonable to breed a draft and a warmblood in order to get the tallest warmblood you can.
- I sometimes worry about creating a ton of new horses because of bogging down the server and the watering down what’s out there. It feels so strange that one of the top things newbies are encouraged to do is create a TON of horses.
- The multitude of available DHHs lowers my investment in the game – I can find a DHH for just about anything I would otherwise have a goal to breed for. And a lot of things that would be early goals for me (thereby creating a foundation of knowledge and experience) are just right there for me everyday.
- With the above two points, I’m having a bit of trouble knowing what my goals should be, what the goal of the game is. When everything listed above is so easy to get, the only thing left I can see is to try to get on the Leaderboards, and I haven't figured out what the benefit of that is - does that "fame" garner higher sale of foals? More breedings of studs? Do people actually reference the LBs when looking to benefit their own lines?
- Somewhat related to previous points, I'm still learning what makes a horse valuable when the DHHs give me expros, ex showers, a multitude of colors already. Maybe it’s expected that we choose not to use them if we would rather breed for them? If so, I don’t know if that’s a reasonable expectation haha! I would like to see more of these things be harder to get, require breeding for them or investing time/money.
I want to finish this by pointing out that I AM a new player, despite the age of my account. I’m still learning and these are all first impressions. In no way do I believe that I’ve unearthed every nuance to the game and I’m excited to keep exploring the forums and reading lessons others have learned, seeing their goals, etc. -
I've been here a while but still consider myself new. It was only last week when I discovered the pricing suggestions for rank specials and herd helpers. I'm currently destashing my herd and starting over since I now understand pointed horses. I like the points you've made above. Thank you for putting them out there. :)Mosspearl Stables
