Experienced breeders: I need advice
-
My first batch of pasture foals has arrived! No fatalities, no extremely low pt, and almost an even split between fillies and colts. So now I need advice.
My focus for this first round was taking the stallion that I liked and mixing him with a wide variety of mares to find out what would come out of the genes. If I have time this weekend I might sit down with my computer up and compare the genes of each horse side by side to get a better idea of what passed on and how things interact.
I'm tempted to leave all the mares in pasture and let them sit, then re-breed the same stallion to the same mares, and after that round compare the offspring from both seasons to see how things differ and what stayed the same. But that strategy is a dishearteningly long-term project and I'm not honestly sure how much good it would do me besides giving me a better idea of what genes are more likely to pass on.
So I guess I have a few questions.
-when you finish a breeding season, what are you looking for? I haven't chosen anything to breed for so what's next in terms of importance?
-do you pull your stallion and mares out of pasture for training and showing? Does the amount of training the sire or dam has have any affect on offspring?
-do you always run BA? I haven't yet and I'm scared lol
-do you retire your stallion if the best colt is AGA or better?
-how long do you hold on to offspring? Do you let then age up to see markings before making decisions? If not how do you decide who to keep and who to sell or auction?
What am I missing? What advice is important? How do I pass the time until next breeding season?
Thank you in advance! -
Personally my mares/studs are left in pasture year round but I have a huge show herd. Your mares gain a bonus for staying in the pasture (30 days max) to increase their breeding ability slightly so it’s typically best to keep your mares in pasture. I find anyway.
I only keep colts/fillies that are superior to their parents but I am extremely strict with my lines. I require my 2gs to be A/Blue papered. I always SBA my foals but I have so many I won’t cry over foals being spayed/gelded. I don’t even open up pages of horses that don’t pass. Can’t be sad if I don’t see them haha.
Training has no effect on offspring whatsoever. Any foals of mine that fail testing are kept for show horses unless I don’t have space. At 10 years of age horses can be sold at auction for their lifetime earnings as the starting bid. I cull my show horses at 10 and the ones that aren’t quite good enough to keep make me around 10k each. But being new you probably won’t have Too much space. Your show horses are the best way to make money in the game.
As far as what to keep and what to breed for…it’s really up to you. You can try to breed for a specific color, or better papers with even breeding, or you Can bootstrap to get a show herd going.
I don’t specifically cull for color in my even lines, only for paper quality. I fantasy gene and just try to mash as many together as I can. But I will keep a good papered mare with no fancy genes and spay a super fancy mare with bad testing.
Also…idk what other people do with their free time on the game because I don’t have any. Haha. I have so many horses to sort I won’t ever get through them. -
I remove my studs ONLY each month. They get shown year round. Mares enter pasture, and remain there until I pull them out at 17/18 years, or when I shuffle things around.
(ETA: I forgot about the new pasture change for mares! I'll be removing and showing my mares going forward for SURE! I'm sitting at 56k/day show bonus, which is higher than the goal was for this fall, I thought I'd barely hit 35k, so what I've been doing is definitely working! I also make SOOO many ExPerf foundations with my herd helpers, so they tend to show unless I need them as well.)
In terms of replacements, I require ALL my breeding stock to pass SBA and be Superior To Parent. The only exception would be my upper gens when I reach the breeding cap naturally, and my bootstraps (who I dont really do anything with except for make higher PT show foals).
To become an elect for a new herd sire, the colt must test Superior To Sire, and test As Good As or better than, the benchmark for that Gen. I then look at the genes. I will easily sell a new potential herd sire and replace him with something more sparkly or have genes I prefer. I'm also not butthurt if I dont produce any new herd sires. I keep 2 extra for each gen to rotate out. Instances where there are two studs exactly the same that I cant choose, I allow PT to do for me. I keep the higher number. Not that it matters, but it is just kind of another thing to try to keep my numbers manageable.
I'm sitting with 7 full pages of stock for sale right now. Lol majority of them being foals.
As far as sorting goes, I put backgrounds on those that I hand sort and "name" (more like label). When they hit 2 years, I add on mane and tail. Then they go to their according pastures. Very rarely do I ever resell something I've already decided to keep.
I'm also a fantasy gene person and I tend to really like most of mine to have some sparkle. Which limits my potential sales... but improves the eye appeal for me to look at. So while I may have some very high quality stock in terms of paper and PT combos, not many are able to be used by folks from the gene combos. Others do not do well in other herds because I ONLY use Red/B paper foundations as a starting point. I also cull off all Red/B papered G2s. My G4 herd MUST be Gold/Star. So my market is pretty darn small. And I need to do some major calculating in terms of my expenses as I sort foals. I spend MUCH more than I should testing the foals I plan on selling.ID# 24891

Thank you both! So I'm gathering that right now even though it's fun to play with colors, I really need to be working on my show herd still. So I imagine focusing on experf or exshow HHs and RS HHs will do me some good? Creating adult show horses and pouring some time into training and showing?
Still very open to more advice! I am typically an enthusiastic learner but I'm not very good at strategizing so I love having tons of other people weighing in with experience! Anything you found useful when starting,, even if it's small, is so valuable to me! -
Grab pointed creates where you can, alter them, and show them twice per week.
Purchase high-PT foals from auction, alter them if they aren't, and show them twice per week.
Altering a horse gives it a training bonus, so it will do better in shows than an unaltered horse.
Keep an eye on the Contests and Games section of the forum, there are often contests there where you can pick up good show horses.
I was playing for about a real-time year before I decided where I wanted to go with my lines, and in the 2.5 years I've been playing I've changed my mind and restructured my herds several times. :) So feel free to play with colors, let those mares live in the pasture so they get that breeding bonus, and don't be afraid to just dump everything and start over when you're bored or you find something you like better.
How are you doing on show horses? I'm sure I have a few that could find a new home with you. :)Folly's Fantasies #43484 (she/her): Horses, straws, and eggs from my Doubleskunk tribute herd are always free. -
I have been lucky enough to have a few people gift me some really lovely show ponies, I think I have 15 or so that were gifted to me. If you have some that you're wanting to cull I obviously won't tell you no, though haha!
I appreciate that you said it took you a real-time year to decide what you wanted to do with breeding... I keep thinking I've been in the game almost two weeks already so I should have some inkling, but that helps put my mind at ease a little bit.
Do you find that the foundation rescue is a decent way to find higher-pt show horses, or is there a good way to sort through lower pt sales for the ones that are better? The highest pt in my herd right now is somewhere aroubd 10.6, and I thought that was pretty good until I started to look in other people's bootstrap barns, lol.
Bootstrapping is still a little confusing to me as well. It's basically just using the highest-pt stallion you can find with any mare you can pick up to gradually raise your overall pt in offspring, right? I saw someone somewhere recommend not to bootstrap until you know what you're doing in the game. Any specific reason why? -
The best show horses always seem to sit between 10-11 pt or 13+ pt. You make a certain amount of money by showing your horses daily. The higher pointed your horses, the more money they make you. You can check your daily amount on the front page under performance overview.
For instance my show horses make me 721k per day. Because I have my show barns alternating the days they show I have horses showing every day of the week. If you want to take a look these are my 9 year old show horses sorted by their total points. You can easily see the high pts make me a good chunk. These horses are still not leveled off and haven’t reached their full potential as show horses:

As far as bootstrapping by goes…it’s a great way to make show horses and I wished I had started earlier. Let me know if you are looking for a bootstrap stud I’ve got tons sitting around doing nothing.
I’m constantly changing And evolving my genetics. I started with champagnes, moved to black livers, moved to pearl, moved to high white…moved to fantasy. -
I really love Brindle and rabicano, and I like the way they interact with different white patterns. Thinking about starting with something along those lines.
721k! I can't even believe that... I thought I was doing ok with 2k a day! Oh boy do I have a but if progress to make lol.
I would be happy to buy a good bootstrap stud if you have one you're willing to let go of.
Do you inbreed at all with your program? -
Believe it or not I’m constantly running out of money, haha. Literally no self control when it comes to boosting/playing with gmts. ^_^ most people don’t spend too much but I go overboard so I have a huge show herd to compensate.
I’ll send you a pm for boys.
Also there are zero penalties for inbreeding. All bootstraps that I know of are inbred.

Ktarpey, as the others have said, it can take awhile to figure out what you want to do. It took me around a year to finally decide on what I wanted. So don't feel rushed at all. Play around with different things you think you may like and I highly recommend working on a herd of decent show ponies to help you fund your play.
On this account I breed from only black based brindle draft foundations (with a ton of shiny genes) for my even lines and black chinchilla with all sorts of bling is my all-time favorite.
I also have an extensive bootstrap herd that I adore playing with. I originally started my bootstraps as an outlet to play with all the colours I don't allow in my even lines but they quickly evolved into mostly black based as well. :)
I have been on this game for a little under 3 years and my daily showing bonus is just under 400k. These things can take time depended on how dedicated or distracted your play style is (mine is veeerry distracted by all the shiny ponies! LOL!)
Everyone has a slightly different way of doing things that works for them and there is no wrong way to go about playing this game.
Feel free to ask tons of questions. I certainly did when I first started (and I still do! LOL) This place is full of amazing, wonderful souls who are happy to help in any way they can. And all of them started out just like you. :x
I am happy to help out with your bootstrap herd as well. I am sure many other players will be too.
pestilenttempest has some absolutely amazing horses, especially studs, and I have a ton of higher PT bootstrap mares that I don't have room for. Shoot me a PM and we can set you up with a nice starter herd. :)
I also highly recommend joining the Bootstrap Breeding And Sales buddy chat. You can ask questions there as well as here on the forum.

Breeding for all version of black drafts using chimera foundations.
Help me build my black brindle army!
Always looking to buy B/Red foundation brindle drafts in black, blue roan, grullo, classic champagne, etc.
I can be very scatterbrained and forgetful so if I don't get back to you in a decent amount of time just poke me. -
I'll chime in lol. Have you been able to get your basic upgrade yet? If not, I highly recommend it. It's 30 IVs for a years subscription. I wouldn't know what to do if I had to go back to a free account lol. Just the auto train alone makes it worth it. If you haven't, just holler at me, I can help.
I just wanted to give a bit of info on pasture mares that's a recent game change. So long as you don't leave your mares out of pasture overnight, they won't lose that pasture bonus. So pop them out, train and show real quick, and pop them back in. You get extra show points, and your mares still build bonus for breeding. I work with very limited pasture space, 100 horses stay in pasture at all times, which hurts me as a boot strapper, not many getting that bonus, but I have a boat load of mares that have a lifetime of shows so they're earning their keep. I run two 1k stall barns of spay/gelds, my bread and butter. But I also have 3 more 1k's slap full of broodmares and a handful of smaller barns as well. Pretty much every horse shows here. All that just to say don't get discouraged and think your mares and studs can't make you money as well, they just do it a bit slower than the spelds.
It takes time to get really good and rolling with this game. I've been playing 3 years and just now feel like I'm getting settled in and have things figured out. Then I'll learn something new lol. When I first started playing it took way longer though. Ammit has done an awesome job making things easier for newer players.
As far as BA, run it. It pays off in the end. You can always breed em again next year and maybe have better luck. The only ones here that don't see BA are my boot mares. And they do once I think my stock is improving or I need to cut numbers down lol.
Just play around, use search to check out everything and find what you like. Once you see it, you'll know. There's a thousand different ways of approaching this game, as far as goals and what you want to do/breed. And none of them are wrong. Even, bootstrap, damage makers, breed by quality, by color, create/breed/auction, it's all up to you and what you have in mind. And you can change your mind anytime you like. The most important thing is to have fun!

I put a bunch of mid range bootstrap mares in auction for tomorrow. If you want to start with that I am sure I can find you a good mare or two out of my keeper herd.45120

@pestilenttempest the boys you gave me are absolutely dreamy, thank you again! I'm trying to figure out who to start with.
@blackwyld thank you again for all the information you sent me! I'm still reading through it (took a break to go RL riding and all I could think about was my pretend horses lol) but it's all been really informative so far!
@windigo yes! Someone was kind enough to gift me the money to upgrade, and someone else gifted me what I needed to buy a larger barn. I've also received so many gifts of show horses and now breeders, and everyone was so wonderful about picking up my creates as well to help me out with money. I was raving about the community to my family last night, they might think I've gone a little bonkers lol. Also thank you so much for the tip about pulling mares out of pasture and training and showing before sending them back in. I was a little sad to be losing that bonus, it's good to know that I don't have to. I've definitely found a good handful of genes that I love already and also a few fantasy genes that I'm planning on working towards eventually. But I feel like I have to pick something to focus on or I'll just make a mess out of things. It's good to be reminded that it's just fine to have a mish mash of everything.
@seaswell I'll check them out, thank you!Thanked by 1WyldWood
