Keep line breeding or start bootstrap?
-
I’ve been working on this line of horses for years but I’m just now getting into fifth generation and have only one 6 gen mare. Do most people just start bootstrapping their lines when the horses get into the higher gens or do they keep evenly line breeding? Should I just throw them all into a pasture and not worry about generations or keep evenly line breeding?

I think the choice is yours. I, personally, want to go as high as I can in even breeding, but what some folks have accomplished in bootstrapping is pretty awesome! So, it depends on what you want to do. :)ID# 25784

I breed even by generation up until 6th generation, then the 7g foals go into my bootstrap herd. I put my 7g fillies into my "low range" band and if they produce higher than expected, they go into my high range band. I mostly don't
use 7g colts but if i get a nice one with Fantasy genes, i'll probably use him in the Fantasy spur of my herd. This is for my Era 3, almost exclusively homebred bootstrap line I've been working on for over a year.#28036 -
Really depends on your goals! Personally I'm about where you are - I have a handful of 6G and like, 1-2 7G in my lines. Personally I plan to keep line breeding them all the way though I have a serious drop off in numbers in the higher gens that's for sure!

I have collected pastures for gen 2 - 6 over the last couple years, anything that graduates from my even lines goes into my bootstrap to add fun genes. I don't have much sparkle in my best mares yet, but I love working on it.45120

Mine are all even bred. And I have some 11g horses but it took me a while and I'm not 100% happy with that line plus they're all dying off so now I've restarted with boosted foundiesWolfgang Pride ID 554

Pasture breeding comes in handy get a ton of mares and mostly keep all that pass SBA or ba with the respected papers you expect for that gen and then be super strict with colts. I only keep superior colts and BIP/BOP colts when I have to many I keep the ones I actually breed. If that helps.Wolfgang Pride ID 554

I ended up keeping my higher gens even-bred and just accepting the fact that getting fewer foals up to standard at the higher gens is just part of the challenge! I've been breeding at gen 6 and up for over a year now and still only have about 12-15 mares at each gen. I will say that having a full pasture bonus is super important if you want to get passing foals at higher gens, so if pasture space is an issue for you, consider either rotating which generations you breed each year or just bootstrap them.ID 43830

When you start getting less and less intact foals it means your breeding ability it is getting more and more uneven. Normally it is mare lag but in the horse, you shared above the stallion is solidly worse than the mare he is being bred to. I would take a closer look at your 4th and 5th gens and try to figure out where they become uneven in quality and rebuild from there.Need to contact me? Read this first. Yeah at the time, the only stallion I had was him but when I got a better stallion that sire was gelded and put in a show barn.
This is my current stud in the 5G pasture and he at least papers star but hopefully I will get a better stud someday.

I started off with yellow/c papered foundations in this line which is probably where the problems started but now my foundation stallion is an experf and most of my foundation mares are red paper, so I’m hoping my lines will improve.ID# 45123 -
It makes zero difference the horses you start with. Having high starting foundations just lets you skip a generation or two in ability but the rules stay the same regardless of where you start. It is the comparison between the stallions and mares that makes the difference for how many intact foals you get.Need to contact me? Read this first. I also went through my barns and found a better 4G stallion too, so hopefully replacing the 4G stallion will help since he should compare better with the mares.ID# 45123

@Gracie3B - I don't know why I didn't think of you, but I literally just gelded this 4G colt that looks like he might match up with the look you are going for - he is hom snowflake, just no Lp and he can be modified to a liver chestnut base. Let me know if he would work for you and I don't mind unaltering him and sending him over. He is a very low *star.

*edited to add - if you own the Autumn license you are also welcome to straws from this guy, or even to just borrow him for a season. Also a very low 4G star.

@HTRanch would the difference in that stallions papering compared to the mares I have make it so I don’t have very many intact foals? If not, I would love to buy him and I can pay for the gmt cost of unaltering him tooID# 45123

@Gracie3B, it depends on where your mares fall in the Blue paper range, if that makes sense. What I would do is find yourself a Blue papered mare that compares as good as a low *gold mare, and then require all your 4G mares to paper AGA to the Blue mare - that way all your mares are within 2-3% quality range comparison to the *star stud. Eventually you can tighten up your standards and require all 4G mares to test AGA the *gold mare.
I don't mind just unaltering him myself and sending him over. I have more IVs laying around than I know what to do with! Spend the hbs on comp testing your mares. It's such a useful tool but it gets expensive quick! I'll put him in JustaNotherChat for you.ID 43830
