GMT Question
-
Ok y’all, I have a small (4 horses) foundation herd that I’ve been gmting before turning them into a breeding herd.
Now I’m thinking I want to make each of them hom sa on one of their DNA sets, but that would mean needing 1600 IVs (aka 20mil hbs).. my question to everyone who’s done big gmt projects is how do you do it? Do you just do one at a time, make some of them het, then work your way up?
Essentially I’m looking for an efficient way to get sa on them!
I have a colt and a filly that will be turning 2, an immature mare that will be turning 3, and another mare that will be turning 5, so I’m hoping to be able to make this happen before the colt turns 3! -
Also, that being said, offering 60 acre pastures at 4mil each of you want to help me feed my addiction ;)
-
For me I wait till they roll around in the RGS and spend real money on them but that's just me I don't have much advice for that I'd try and just buy horses that already have those genes that are foundie like a stallion or ask someone for help in that.Wolfgang Pride ID 554
Always willing to help. Licensed for everything. Specialize in Liver Chestnuts, Chocolate Palominos, Sabino, Tobiano. But I breed everything except Frame

Thank you @Wolfgang! Do you know if satin rolls in the RGS?
-
Almost all of the genes that cost more than one GMT come up in the RGS periodically. It's luck, and the more common genes come up more often. So you won't find Extension or Agouti in the RGS, but you will find Sabino and Satin and S+ and stuff.Folly's Fantasies #43484 (she/her): Horses, straws, and eggs from my Doubleskunk tribute herd are always free.
-
@FolliesFantasies thank you! I’ll hold off for now until they roll around. It’ll be hard to resist breeding them, but so worth it in the end!
-
Like I said, dumb luck. BUT
The last couple of years Ammit has put every gene up for sale in the final few days before Christmas. So you can also play around now and plan ahead.
And if Ammit is reading this, I want to say thank you for that! I love the all-out Christmas blast. :)Folly's Fantasies #43484 (she/her): Horses, straws, and eggs from my Doubleskunk tribute herd are always free. -
@FolliesFantasies Oh that sounds fun! I’m going to start saving up some ExPros for that!
-
You can get any gene into your herd with a het stud to start with. Keep your het passing babies and by 3g you will have hom. That way you can start till you can afford to gmt more things to strengthen the gene. I'd het your stud and your oldest mare for now.45120Thanked by 1FollysFantasies

@Seaswell that is a really good idea, I’m just hesitant because I want them to be how I imagined them right off the bat; I can be a little impatient lol.
-
I am too. I find that I try to set up mares specific to my herd, which can mean a lot of GMTs in some cases. The struggle is real. When I set up my stud after Chocolate came out, I had to GMT or search for an entire pasture of 50 mares that were all black based. There are a LOT of chestnuts in the game, probably 2 or even 3 red-based horses for every black based horse when you're making creates.Folly's Fantasies #43484 (she/her): Horses, straws, and eggs from my Doubleskunk tribute herd are always free.
-
@FolliesFantasies oh wow! I can imagine that would be hard to keep up with!
And that’s so crazy, I wouldn’t have expected that, I love the look of black based horses! I’m really excited for this line to be finished, they’re black pearl sabino and silver black chimeras with hom sabino1/2, kp/kp2, dp on the pearl set and sty on both sets. I’m looking to make them all hom satin on their silver set, then het chinchilla when it rolls around :) it’s going to be a long project, but it’ll be worth it in the end!Thanked by 1FollysFantasies -
@CoppiLane I always start with my stallions for a GMT project because that gets me “bang for my buck”. However, it sounds like you’re planning your herd via a lot of egg flushes instead of pasture breeding. One thing to remember is good quality GMTd foundation eggs are always in demand so if you get one mare set, you may be able to sell eggs (yes, at the expense of using them yourself) to help fund further work on other horses. Since your colt is still young, you might put your money in your breeding age mare right now and sell half her eggs in a forum auction.
Having GMTs on sale at the moment may also help you speed your project along! -
@Cheers I haven’t even thought of selling eggs, that’s such a good idea! I may do that and get her on hom sa, then sell out eggs after the chin gets on her!
-
I can’t remember if you can still change genetics after you have pulled eggs or straws. Research that before you jump in!
-
I have horses with eggs pulled that can still be GMT'd. I don't remember if I've done this with stallions that have straws pulled. There is a limit, I believe, on how many eggs they can have before they're no longer GMTable. I want to say it's 30, but don't quote me.Love,

@SpryOfJune I was originally going to wait until after the chinchilla gets put on, but i might do if that’s the case!
