Show Horses

How do you know if a foal will make a good show horse? Is it the papers? Pt score?
-
Papers tell you about breeding ability and have nothing to do with showing. The PT score tells you how about fast and how long the foal will train. Horses with higher PT scores will reach higher showing levels where they have the potential to earn higher points before they level off. However there is an element of luck involved in where a horse's score will fall, so it is possible to have a high PT horses that hit the bottom of of each class one week and level up to the next level the next week (others will regularly hit the top of the class). Lower PT scores train slower and stay in each level longer and can earn lots of points. There is no way to know for sure if a foal will be lucky as a show horse or not. I generally keep everything. Here is a link to all my 15 year old horses shorted by all time points for examples: https://hj2.huntandjump.com/adv_search.php?runsearch=go&agee=15&f_adv=points_py&owner=88&offset=650&offset=0Breeding high quality Sheldasen horses. Like Ondowa I keep all my foals each season and rarely sell any after that. The players who do cull out their show herd, generally recommend not to evaluate until they've levelled off. Which is because until the horse levels off in their training, you really don't know how good of a show horse they'll be.
