I need help on figuring out fantasy genes
-
So I'm on a quest of sorts to start breeding a bunch of fantasy genes. I've made a list of the ones I want and gathered candidates for a couple. But there are some that I can't figure out the right base for despite looking up examples. The ones I can't figure out are the following:
Onyx - I remember reading somewhere that you need nd2 for it to show up at it's darkest. I can't find that thread anymore so I can't double check that.
Axiom - I just got nexus, but I want the three axiom colors too. What's a good non fantasy gene to look for it you want to add axiom to a horse? I added nexus to a plain chestnut boy and he came out amazing. Would axiom act in the same way? (And out of curiosity, has anyone chimera'd two axiom colors yet? I bet that would look trippy.)
Chinchilla - I have completely forgotten everything about this gene. So I know nothing about it.
I think that's all. If I think of other questions, I'll update this post to show them and for those wondering the same, I will add any answers to my inquiries here too.Be not afraid to ask questions. You're not the only idiot in the room.

Here is the announcement from H Chinchilla’s release

For axiom (red, green, blue), the base color doesn’t matter when they are homozygous. It matters what two colors of axiom you combine.
So axiom red/green turns yellow
AHH Fundamental Pockets
Axiom green/blue turns aqua
G1 Neptunes Kuiper
Axiom red/blue turns pink/purple
Neptunes Folly
Onyx only requires one copy to show. I don’t really think nd1 affects it at all, and onyx/dun creates a ghost type effect.
This is Dun/onyx

For chinchilla, my favorite is a silver black base.

Just like FallenShadows said, I am not sure about nd2 making any difference with onyx. I find the darker the coat the better the onyx can be seen although I have seen some gorgeous ones in more subtle shades.
I don't know much about the closed gene axioms but I do have a lot of nexus.
Since nexus inverts colours horses with varying shades to them seem to express better. The darker the horse the lighter the nexus will turn out. Black horses with nexus are just grey.
Liver gives some neat bright blues but if you want those cool oil on water kind of expressions horses that carry pearl, cream, and champagne are the way to go.
@Cheers has been working on some very informative threads on colour expression and has an excellent one covering the different potential nexus expressions on different coat colours. I am on my phone and can't find it.
Chinchilla is my jam! My favourite expression is on silver blacks but brown and bay chins can be nice too. With the brown and bays, if you want to see decent expression you want some darkening genes on your horse like sty, S+, and/or DP. Chinchilla needs black or E to be able to show. A chestnut horse is just going to turn out all white.ID# 47364
Breeding for all version of black drafts using chimera foundations.
Help me build my black brindle army!
Always looking to buy B/Red foundation brindle drafts in black, blue roan, grullo, classic champagne, etc.
I can be very scatterbrained and forgetful so if I don't get back to you in a decent amount of time just poke me. -
I had actually gone to the FAQ section and found explanations on the different genes.
@BlackWyld that's good to know about nexus. I have a couple of cream horses that I wasn't sure what to with. Now I know.
Silver Black is a color I already love. Might be worth my time to get a silver Black chinchilla herd.Be not afraid to ask questions. You're not the only idiot in the room.

Axiom tends to over-ride whatever colour it's put on to a large extent, so base colour doesn't matter that much. Nexus however yes you can see ice genes, watercolour etc through it so can get some great affects!
I second chinchilla being an awesome gene, most of my horses are silvers so it fits in well in my herd, and looks fantastic with other ice genes, watercolour etc too! -
I have to suggest playing fantasy roulette in at least one pasture. You can get some gorgeous results! In my herd I'm particularly enjoying the ones like these girls... :x

This is the Nexus thread: https://hj2.huntandjump.com/forum/discussion/65079/nexus-variations-due-to-normal-base-color#Item_67
The first page or so is the most informative. Basically the darker the coat would be on a normal horse, the lighter it is with hom Nexus and vice versa.
