What can you tell me about him!
  • So I'm still learning about hidden genetics like snowflake so what can y'all tell me about my favorite boy and main stud in my new line thanks!

  • He is homozygous for snowflake and carries one copy of tiger eye.
    ID# 25784
  • He is heterozygous for Appaloosa, and homozygous for snowflake. That means only roughly half of his offspring will carry the required copy of Appy to show any potential homozygous snowflakes (in case you have secret foundation mare carriers, it’s rare to find). All of his foals will be heterozygous for snowflake, so they will be silent carriers of the gene (snowflake requires two copies, plus at least one copy of Appy to show).

In his foals, breeding a son to the daughters will give you the best chance at having third gen foals that are homozygous snowflake. I strongly advise, if snowflake is a want in this line, that you obtain an egg or two from a red papered, homozygous snowflake foundation mare. That will give you guaranteed homozygous foals, which gives you a better chance of homozygous foals in the third gen and beyond.
  • Thank you that is very helpful! I'm still figuring all the advanced stuff out lol
  • Ooo, he's beautiful @RebelRanch, Bay's are my weakness lol :x it's made me curious about my guy's genetics as well (since i ain't got a whole lot of the genetics down yet either lol) :D

  • @Riverstone18 Your boy has the exact same odds with appy and snowflake. Your boy also does not have any darkening genes, so his foals will always be on the lighter side (unless they turn out black from the dam). Congrats on the brindle colt!
    Thanked by 1Riverstone18
  • @FallenShadows714 yeah, his colt was a surprise :))

  • @RebelRanch @Riverstone18
When I discovered the cool things that the brown gene does when combined with other genes, particularly with the hidden gene dense pheomelanin (DP), and then what sooty plus (S+) does to most colors, I was hooked and started paying more attention to the genetics part of the game to breed specific color lines. For example, this guy has one of my favorite color combos like the real horse on my banner page: Brown-based buckskin with S+, and DP:

I actually put this combo on my AOLMP stud to spread these goodies all over my herds :-)

Sooty plus is also really cool on Sable Champagne (Ch with At):

    and on silver black:
