Liver Red Dun
-
Hi all. I have slowly fallen in love with the Liver Red Dun colouring and markings. I’d love to start my own line from Foundation stage but am struggling with the genetics. What would make a good starting point?
-
Liver red duns are chestnuts with double sooty and dp (or double dp and het sooty) as well as at least one dun gene.
There are dark red dun herd helpers which are a great start to this kind of line - if you're lucky some will get DP too. Otherwise, chestnuts (so no E genes), duns (at least one D gene) and sooty (StySty if possible) and DP are what you need to mix in. -
Thank you that’s a great help. I guess the hard part will be getting the DP into the line. I’m not sure yet how to identify it.
-
If you can't afford to GMT the DP (it costs 10GMTs or $10 when it is available in the roving gene sale), the best way to find the DP is to create horses from one of the red based homozygous sooty herd helpers (Dark Chestnut, Sooty Flaxen Chestnut, Dark Red Dun, or Sooty Palomino). Any horse with DP from one of these will have liver (or chocolate if palomino) in it's color name, as well as being noticeably darker that the rest.
If you breed liver stallions to homozygous sooty red mares then 50% of the foals will be liver.Breeding high quality Sheldasen horses. Liver chestnut, DP mushroom, and rose gray riding horses. Dun cobs with all the patterns. Watercolor, Wrong Warp and ice on mixed body types.

In addition to the horses I pmed you about, the Foundation Rescue has a full page of hom sty red duns. Foundation Rescue horses are at least equal to Perfect Foundations horses. They're not all color tested, so you sometimes have to sort them individually, but they are good breeders, sometimes have points, and are available for 2750 hbs. They are one of my go-tos when I'm looking for something specific.

Thank you! I picked up some lovely girls for next season! Can’t wait to get started
-
Also I know this won't help for next breeding season, but in September we'll have a Friday the 13th! On this site that means Freaky Friday creates! Freaky Fridays are hom dp, hom sooty, and hom frame. They can be black based or chestnut based. Most people gmt off the frame if it's a stallion and use it as a herd sire. Another popular RS for this is the Cherry Drop. It does require some gmting to get to a liver base, but it's the only other guaranteed hom dp create out there, albeit a no-sooty wild bay one.Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.
Prices are almost always negotiable.
On the look out for pointed creates -
Don't forget Rhythm of Fours are guaranteed to be at least het DP too, they are generally buckskins. Odds are we will see them sometime in the holiday season (Nov or Dec I think).Dabbler in EVERYTHING.Thanked by 1ObsidianKitsune

I got this girl searching for lottery and fish. :) I'm shifting to ExPer/ExPro though. Do you want her? Will sell for 3100hbs to cover testing.

I have this red dun mare, she's foundation stock and hom. for Sty. If this is what you're looking for you can have her -
@Looper she’s stunning yes please
-
@RiverMeadows she would be perfect, what price are you wanting for her?
-
If you can rustle up a 1 hb that'll work well for me. ;) I'll put her in here for
you

I think I can manage that, thank you very much xx

Septemeber 13th there will be a freaky Friday RS. You can start collecting your mares now and then grab yourself a herd sire. If you get a black FF you could proabbly swap for a chestnut and then GMT dun and roan on him.
Or maybe we can work out a deal over my already GMTed stud? He isnt dun but he could be a good start for you. I really like him but my riding horse line is black based now so he's wasting

I am very forgetful so if I owe you anything but am taking to long please send me a PM. I don't get on to play the game as often as I once did but I am usually most active during the 2nd and 3rd week of each month -
Oh he is stunning ColorGoodStables I would snap him up in a flash but I am 100% sure I can’t offer what he is worth. Thank you for the thought though.
I will be keeping my eyes open for the Freaky Friday HH you all mentioned sounds like a great addition to my project.
I bred my first Liver Red Dun today thanks to all the help I have had. Unfortunately she got spelded but she is beautiful and I wanted to thank everyone who offered me advise and stock to get me started.

@Shadyfemme If you don't mind ND1 in your liver dun line, you might like this guy. He's still GMTable and has just been sitting in my barn waiting for me to get inspired. He's already had both OLW removed and homozygous ND1 added, and with dark red dun mares should throw nothing but liver dun if I remember right that DRD is always hom dun. :)

@Shadyfemme, she's in Looper's Loosas for you :)
-
@Looper thank you :)
@JustaSaddletramp he is drool worthy! How much are you wanting for him, again I’m not sure I can afford what he’s worth but maybe in a week or two I might have enough. -
@Shadyfemme Since you're just getting started good, I'll let you have him as long as you'll promise not to sell him. Like I said, I'm not using him and we'll get another Freaky Friday next month. :)
Edit: He's up for you in my chat, you're already a member.
Son of edit: I'll use the name on one of my other project boys, I love that song. :x~*~ Justa ~*~

Wow! Thank you so much, he will stay with me I promise. Need to save up for a few more mares and then I will pasture the girls maybe get a few more intact that way.
-
@Shadyfemme You're very welcome, I hope he does great for you and that you enjoy him! And yes, you definitely will get more intact foals with pasture bonus mares than you will from mares in the barn. :)~*~ Justa ~*~
