Onyx Decision
  • So, I'd really like Onyx, but I'm trying to decide where to put it.

On HJ1, I had the goal of learning appy genetics, and decided to breed for large spot blanketed, slow-varnishing appaloosas of any size, with various dilutions or roans thrown in. I've gotten handle on appy genetics, so that goal has been accomplished...but I just don't enjoy breeding for appaloosas. It's requiring more time an effort than my casual play mind wants, and honestly, I'm think I'd be just as happy to buy megaspot show ponies and look at their prettiness than worry about breeding them. But...that feels like giving up, and I hate the idea of giving up.

On HJ2, I breed riding horses that could come from the breeds in the stories I write - 14-15.3hh, splash, dun, champagne, sooty, silver, roan, and no other white patterns. I'm trying to keep it very realistic like horses. However, I could totally see someone getting an extreme dun pattern (i.e. Onyx), saying "this is cool" and adding to the breeds.

Any one have advice or thoughts of where they'd put Onyx?

  • It's not giving up, you were successful! You're moving on. Changing your breeding goals is just a step toward another success. :D

It sounds like you're already happy with what you have here. :) HJ1 is the one that needs a change. :D

  • I stick to realistic colorations so for me, fantasy genes have to be something that could potentially be real. Plaid, watercolor, and all those are just too extreme for my tastes. Chinchilla is based on real genetics, albeit in another species, so i got that. Onyx is based on a real animal's coloration, again a different species, but i have seen some interesting extreme duns so i can see where it could happen. So i got it too.

It looks neat with appaloosa though, so you could add it to that project and still breed for the appy goals you have. The onyx would shake it up a bit and make it not just breeding for appies. But that could complicate things more.

I say put it where you know it will be used. If you don't really like the appy project anymore, maybe start a new project with the onyx? You could incorporate some of the appies, instead of just putting it in that project and then it fading out because you loose intrest in the project.
