Culling help?!
-
Ok so in my primary barn is all my show horses that i *could* lose at roll over. Who should I keep and who should I cull? I'm having a hard time culling my show horses so I figured start small! After getting some help here maybe I'll be able to figure out who to keep and to cull 10+!

I'm checking records to see who is showing at the bottom of their class, ex 6/12 or worse, and at risk of loss at rollover. So they're not earning points or show pay anymore. That means just daily payout which you would get lump at the auction if I understand new system correctly.

With how the lifetime payout is working, I think it only calculates until a horse is about to turn 18, ie age out. So a horse 17/18/19 will only have that months payout on their sheet. Due to this, and because I have the space, I'm keeping those horses.
For the other show ponies, I sorted by age (age equals 10, for example) and then sorted by points that breeding season. The reasoning is that horses who are at the end of their group will not win much points, and thus be at the bottom of that list. I'll check that they are indeed leveled off, and coming in the last 3 of their group. If they tick those two boxes, off to the auction they go. Rinse and repeat for 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, and 16 year olds.Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.
Prices are almost always negotiable.

I'm doing the same as ObsidianKitsune, except i'm only doing horses below the median point average for that age bracket.#28036

Thank you guys!

I do a much rougher version of ObsidianKitsune, but same basic concept. I've left the 10/11yo ones mostly alone for now as I don't have too many PT's under 10, so they would only have just leveled off. So I basically go to my show barn and sort on points. If they have under 400-ish total points and have been leveled off for a good season or two (so for 12yo the ones with low points and PT under 11, for a 14yo low points and PT maybe under 12) then off they go. I check a few randomly but so far the ones with low points haven't leveled off in a good place and aren't making me much more money anyway. I leave the 17yo and older as they may as well age out and get me as many points as they can. Exceptions might be little to no points and they are probably more worth the minimum price of 2500. ObsidianKitsune has a good point with searching for only points this season, I might have to try that one too

Yeah, I found when I was sorting through my show barns (using the same basic method as ObsidianKitsune and Kintara), that I had some horses whose lifetime payout was less than the 2500 they were guaranteed at auction! I chucked those horses in right away -- their barn space is better used for another horse who will perform better.

I have 3 days off this week so I'm planning on doing 2 accounts to get started on the cull I know needs to happen. I'm so glad you asked this question cause I don't even know where to start.
-
Yeah, like GeneverGinger I too found horses who had leveled off very very early and whose lifetime payout were less than 2500, even when they still have a few seasons left! Into the auction they went for me as wellProducer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.
