Identifying Genes
-
I have a few hom nexus I’m trying to keep breeding as a side project, and I’d love to know how to identify their true coloring! Can anyone help me out with these two?
CLNX Stormy Nights
I’m suspecting stormy night be chestnut Appy or buckskin Appy, but like I said, have never tried identifying until now :))
CLNX Fiesta Xanax
And fiesta I think may be silver black splash? -
Stormy Nights is a Bay Dun Tobiano Appaloosa, and Fiesta Xanax is a Palomino Splash :)ID 108
-
Haha you make it look so easy @maribo! :))
Would you mind going over how you did that? Which of stormys genes are recessive vs dominant and how to identify the specific coloring so I can try doing it with others? -
To break it down:
Stormy Nights:
Ee = Black (but can produce red based foals)
Aa = Heterozygous dominant agouti, wich makes a black horse bay
CcrC = Heterozygous cream (makes a bay horse buckskin, a red horse palomino and a black horse smokey black)
Dnd2 = Heterozygous Dun
StySty = Two sooty genes (sooty darkens the color)
Sasa = Heterozygous satin (gives a sheen to the coat when homozygous sasa)
KittoKit = Heterozygous tobiano
LpL = Heterozygous appaloosa (Leopard)
ECA3P+ECA3PPATN1 = Heterozygous PATN1 (works with Lp to control blanket size)
NxNx = Homozygous Nexus
Fiesta Xanax:
ee = Red (or chestnut/sorrel/whatever you want to call it)
Aa = Heterozygous dominant agouti (has no effect on a red horse, but the horse can produce red, black and bay based foals)
zZ = Heterozygous silver
SpSps = Heterozygous splash
NxNx = Homozygous nexusID 108 -
Woah, I didn't see your reply before posting :) I was hurrying when I wrote the first answer and came back to explain a bit better :P Feel free to ask if there is something thats unclear.ID 108

@Maribo Wouldn't Stormy Nights be a Buckskin Dun Tobiano Appaloosa? Since he has a cream gene?Bluegrass Server: HayesStable - 221755

Oh, and I have been playing online games with equine genetics for 18 years now, so I have a pretty good grasp of it. Some of the more intricate details still baffle me though. Don't feel discouraged if it takes some time to get the hang of it.ID 108

Yes, Hayes! Good catch! I totally didn't see that cream gene sneaking in there.
He is, indeed, a Buckskin Dun Tobiano Appaloosa. I will add the cream gene to the rundown above.ID 108Thanked by 1AHayesHorses -
Haha thank you @Maribo! It’s awesome how good you are at that! And thank you for breaking it down for me, I have a lot of practice! :))
-
@maribo, how can you tell if a horse is hom/het or even carries dp?
-
If a horse is het it is a carrier, do only shows up in the name if a horse has 3 darkening alles so sty sty dp or sty dp dp but by looking at horse you can be sure that it is het if it has one Hom parent and Hom if it has 2 Hom parents but black liver is fairly obvious
-
I believe that I once heard that aside from looking at the coloring and markings, there is no definite way to know if a horse or foal is dp. That there is no gene or color name that is definite that it carries? This is true?
-
The only color name that changes when there are at least 3 darkening genes are chestnut, which becomes Liver chestnut, and palomino, which becomes chocolate Palomino. Other than that, the color name stays the same whether there is DP present or not.
-
The only name change with DP/Sooty/Sooty + is with red horses. When they have some combo if 3 darkening genes Chestnuts become Liver Chestnuts, Red Duns become Liver Red Duns and Palominos become Chocolate Palominos other than that unless a horse has a hom parent (in which case you know the offspring is at least het) or a horse produces a Liver/Chocolate with a confirmed non carrier. You can tell some versions of Bay because of color change but with Blacks it's pedigree or offspring.
-
So there are two liver chestnuts that I’m auctioning off, and a chocolate palomino that I’m keeping, can they all be marked as dp?
-
Yes, they can.De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."
