Colt boosting, best results question
  • For best results should this colt be bred to Blue papered mares only? Want offspring that'll pass SBA. He was best pasture foal of the year, plus 5% boost. I accidentally put it on him instead of the B papered colt.

  • Was he A papered to start? Or a high B? Definitely best to stick with blue mares, but if he was a B to start with you might be able to squeak by with red papered mares that passed SBA out of a B/Red cross.
  • So with a 5% boost, whether he was a high B or a low A to start he’s now a middle A. This means you will be getting the most foals that pass testing if you breed him to Blue mares. You may get better results breeding him to Blue mares from high B/Red and low A/Blue parents (so not ExPro foundation parents but rather to 3rd gen mares). Basically by boosting him, you’ve made a gen 2 colt into gen 3 quality. So if you’re keen to breed even generations, you’re probably going to struggle with this guy...
  • So I should probably not SBA his babies then?
  • If you want to breeed even by generation, I’d certainly start by BAing just the colts and see how many pass that. If a bunch pass, then SBA the colts and see how many pass that. Decide whether you want to only paper, BA or SBA the fillies based on how the colts are passing. Ie—treat it like a Bootstrap Herd.
