Give your horse wings!
-
Inspiration by @Bourbon's fabulous wing drawing, wing art by me.
Since we don't actually have a tack pack yet, I figured make-your-own is the next best option - and these were too fun not to share! I use ibispaint X, a free, mobile art program, but these should work with any program that allows you to import and manipulate transparent images.
The link has an example, the lineart, shaded lineart, and full greyscale version, plus a placement guide. Lineart for the do-it-yourselfers (or hey, you can really do it yourself and go from scratch!), shading for the do-it-yourselfers that don't want to bother with their own shade, and the full greyscale version for easier DIY or simpler programs - just use a "recolor" option of some sort, or even just a semi-transparent layer to add the color!
Size set for large drafts, so you may need to shrink the wings a small amount for the shorter, smaller ponies. (Or you may not - go big or go home! :P )

I'd love to see the results if anyone else goes for it! If you need tips on navigating ibispaint if you choose to use that, I'd be happy to help.
Go crazy! Additional tack and rainbow colors strongly encouraged! :xID 45703 | he/himOpen barn policy - no closed lines! I'm always selling straws and eggs from anything I have that catches your eye, don't hesitate to PM me and ask! -
@-) WOW lally! These are amazing! I would love to see one of these on a watercolour beastie - especially the nacre/watercolours. Great job :xThanked by 1Lallyhop

Is it only on a laptop or can it be used on a phone? If only on a laptop then can you use it without a internet connection? I really LOVE messing with art and creating my own things so I'd very much like to make all the tack that I'd mention! If I can, lol!
EDIT: nvm I figured out how to get it installed but can't seem to get a nice finished product cause I really don't know how to use anything on this app.Thanked by 1Lallyhop -

@Wolvevenfrosst Don't worry, it can take a little bit to get used to any new art program! For starters, for the wing, pick the picture you want (lineart, shaded, or full greyscale) and save it to your device. Go to your barn and find the horse you want to use, and long press to save image. Go to ibispaint, and in the new canvas section select "import photo" rather than selecting a canvas size. Once you import it, there's a little box that pops up with something about editing the photo - hit cancel to that, otherwise it makes the whole thing greyscale.
Once you've got that base, there's a button on the bottom taskbar that has a small number on a square. Hitting that should get you to layers. Inside layers, there's a little matching photo button to the first that allows you to import a new photo. You'll select the wing, it'll import, slide it around until it's where you want it, then hit the little green checkmark.
From there, you can play around with layers on top of and below the wing until you get the color you want. If you selected the full greyscale, you'll want to make a new layer above it, then in the layer menu there's a little drop down that reads "normal" - hit that, and change it to "overlay", then select the color you want and scribble on top of the wing.ID 45703 | he/himOpen barn policy - no closed lines! This is a really cool effect, but may I point out that I think wings are powered by shoulder muscles, so they probably ought to be placed just below the withers, not behind them.De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."

I've got it all down! Except for getting rid of the black around the wing I really don't know how to do that part.Thanked by 1Lallyhop

@SandyCreekFarm Actually, it would have to be a separate set of muscles to allow for movement of front legs separate from wings. In humans, the most likely placement would essentially be a second set of pecs below or partially under the first. In horses, that extra set of muscles for the upstroke would be connecting just above and overlapping the spinalis dorsi, and possibly tucked partially under the infraspinatus depending on width, then connecting to the wing. These muscles require less power, as the upstroke is the easier of the two. (Using the names seen here: https://goo.gl/images/Hhx7yS )
The downstroke would require a larger muscle (the breast you eat in birds is large due to this). It would probably be wrapping over the rib muscles as it came off the wing, and would likely be attaching at the other end to the chest - specifically, the ribcage, which would have a reinforced bone plate as the regular ribcage would probably be unable to support the immense pressure required to create lift. Birds have a specialized bone called a keelbone that supports the strain.
Of course, assuming the horse has hollow bones and other minor adaptations that contribute to a lighter bird, flight becomes a bit easier, but the sheer size of the wings (I made them a bit smaller than they should be to fit in the picture frame; the primaries would likely extend a solid couple of feet past the tail and the alula at furthest point would likely sit forward of the shoulder a bit further) and the overall size of the horse still means we're dealing with an animal of around 100-300 pounds depending on which bird you use for calculations. (An adult male human would be roughly 30-35 pounds with a wingspan of 15 to 20 feet depending on wing shape, so a horse could probably easily surpass a 35-40 foot wingspan, especially if able to glide).
Of course, it's your horse, so feel free to place the wings wherever you want! I'm just a bit of a bird nerd (and fantasy nerd) myself, so I've done a bit of dabbling into the physics and anatomy of bird-winged creatures before. It's obviously fantasy, so "magic" is just as accurate an answer. :xID 45703 | he/himOpen barn policy - no closed lines! So how do I upload an image here? And when there what do I do to get it here? Cause I can't figure it out for the life of me how to get the black around the wing to go away. But I'd like to show you as to what I mean.
-
You use some sort of image share site (I've been using tinypic), get the link to share, and then to make it show as a picture instead of a link you use the tiny button that looks like a picture at the top of the compose box right after B/I/U/S/C for formatting, and paste it in the code.
It'll look like this, but without the space between the < and the "img", and you paste the link to the picture between the quotes.

There it is!

Ah! It didn't save as transparent. Might be your device or might be the file, but it needs to save as a png to remain transparent. For now, you can either try again, or you can just erase the black and it should work still.ID 45703 | he/himOpen barn policy - no closed lines! Well that link wasn't the one...
-
Well now I give up...it's not working anymore huh. Sucks too cause I finally managed to get it by starting from scratch almost. Used the white cut out of the wing and had to do all the coloring and shading and all the erasing. Finished but sadly not able to show, nor provide a link. My understanding of technology is surprisingly little to none.

@BlackWyld Lol, I've always been a geek for fantasy biology. It's one of the most fascinating things for me to take science and magic/fantasy and blend them into something that seems like it could actually work. :D
Heck, I've spent years on developing a magic system for my book that I feel is about as close to "real" as magic could get - from it being considered an element of the electromagnetic force to the way it meshes with and flows along the nervous system, the way it was perceived alongside humours and elements in history and the way modern science can study it, how it's used and how it's stopped (hint, tasers will drop a mage pretty quick) and beyond. I could go on for ages. I'm pretty sure that maybe 2-3% of my worldbuilding tops will actually make it into the book :))
@SpryofJune Try it on mobile! There's a free app called ibispaint that works great. I'd love to see what you could do! :DID 45703 | he/himOpen barn policy - no closed lines! I'm always selling straws and eggs from anything I have that catches your eye, don't hesitate to PM me and ask! -
Thanks @Lallyhop! It took me forever to get it done but in the end I was so pleased with it, well worth it. @SpryOfJune I'm trying to do their wings but I'm having a bit of beginners trouble as it looks so off and weird. Hopefully I can get the baby's wings done better. Cause right now, the guys wings look so bad. :PThanked by 1Lallyhop
