Almost ready for the big GMT... Which horse?
-
Had a big plan for doing a major gmt project which will end up looking like a normal grullo with this horse, and I have almost decided to just go with him because he has the more striking look of the two, though just hoping I am not thinking stupidly.
Lokis Jest
Obviously a play on Norse mythology and the fact that there will be a few tricks up his sleeve. He is taller, which I find striking in drafted, and I hope his lower bone weight for drafts will help my mares push most of the foals to warmblood, though there is a good chance that if he threw some drafts they would be stunning. He also has a better white factor, though I don't know if the difference of the heredity of none and minimal are really that significant. I would have lost an entire breeding season with him though, he bering 4.
When I was frantic about wether or not I would be able to get the gmts for the other guy in time the freaky Friday herd helper came out and I got this guy, name a play on Welsh mythology. He is warmblood, my main herd build, and is shorter, though I am less concerned about height on medium weight horses than heavy weight. I am still leaning towards the first guy, though this one is only 3. Any thoughts?

Well, I'm a draft person, so my personal bias runs to the first fellow. His height does make him striking!
However, I know that I have a few heavy boned warmbloods in my stable that are there for specific genes. Though I usually can breed them up with my draft mares, I find I don't use them nearly as much as my draft stallions. I have to factor in relative bone weights to increase the chances and I've been disappointed on a few occasions by really striking foals that were warmbloods but, in my mind, not worth GMTing up to draft size.
So, if warmbloods are really your thing, I'd say go for the second one. I think you'll be happier with him in the end. -
Good point. I have been lucky with my two gen 2 draft boys only throwing intact warmbloods so far, though I would be ok with about 10% of the horses in my herd being drafts, some of my keeper fillies are chosen because they stand out as drafts and I don't mind them. Will definitely think about that though. All into high quality black based primitive duns and bootstraps.
