My herd helper today says that the horses I create will have a copy of the w20 gene. Can anyone tell me what this gene is and what it does?

W20 by itself may be silent or it may increase a horse’s “normal” markings, like blazes and stars on the face, stockings and socks on the legs. Very rarely it may give a white patch on the belly.

W20 is mostly a modifier gene. It increases the expression of other Kit patterns like Tobiano or white spotting. It also increases the expression of the various versions of Splash.

In general w20 is a safe gene, but W20 increases the risk factor if you mix it into combinations that are already quite risky. That probably won’t be an issue for you now, but if you decide to breed for lots of patterns mixed together in the future you will want to keep an eye on W20 with certain conbinations.

Oh—W20 is also quite dynamic. If you reroll the image of a horse with W20 the markings may change quite dramatically.

In my experience most of of the horses that I have with w 20 and no other white modifiers end up with white socks and a white facial marking.
