Getting straws before gelding?
-
I am thinking about gelding most of my B papered 3G studs. I am wondering though if you all get straws from them before you geld? I am mainly doing it because I have way to many stallions and I have several A papered boys now.
What would you all do? -
I go back and forth. It's nice to have straws from a variety of stallions, and if you've figured out one is more quality, but you like the other one as well, then straws are a good option. However it's more expensive to do straws. Are you going to get enough more of a show bonus to even cover the cost of the increased amount of money doing AI breeding?
When I converted from breeding every pretty pony I had to even breeding I got 3 straws from all of the ones I couldn't bear to completely get rid of but really needed to cull. Now they are pretty show ponies (or were auction fodder) and they are there teasing me to breed to them. But if I find the perfect pretty mare I still have straws.Breeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses.

Usually if Im gelding its because they arent up to par or they arent as nice as my other boys. If I wouldnt use them in pasture I most likely wouldnt use their straws. So if you love any of them then for sure pull some straws but if theyre just "meh" and you dont see yourself using them then I wouldnt

I keep WAY too many straws, and it makes me nuts! I am in a 'clean out the freezer' frenzy right now. I have straws from horses that, when I go back and look at them, I can't remember why I wanted to save straws, and from lines I quit breeding ages ago!

LOL!, I'm mostly using them! It means I'm getting some colors that are not often seen in my barns!

Ok, just making sure! I would be sad if they were just deleted.Breeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses.
