How do rare genes work?

Not talking about my previous post, but like Axiom, for example. I adore it, but it won’t let me breed into my line? Also if one gets a random herd helper that can pull axiom, for example, do they need to buy the rare gene license?

There are certain closed genes(purple) that you either need to buy the license for or buy that gene and put it in a horse in order to be able buy and breed to horses with that gene.
Herd helpers never have closed genes. -
To add, for Axiom specifically, there is Axiom nexus (X) which you do not need a gene lisence for. You do need a lisence for B, R, G and W though.
