A straw is sperm, the male gamete. An egg is the female gamete. An embryo is created when you merge the two. You can do this in the lab or inside the mare. Using a straw to directly create foal inserts the sperm into the mare's uterus. It merges with the egg inside of her. A lab-created embryo is a fertilized egg that is later implanted into a recipient mare's uterus.

In real life, you can create embryos inside the mare and then remove it to implant elsewhere, or you can create the embryo in a petri dish. In our game, we only have the petri dish method as they are the same net result.
