Year of the Chimera
  • So some of you might remember I have a little side project breeding naturally born lined chimeras. I've been really slacking these last few months with pairing up chimera x chimera breedings, and occasionally even skipping several of my pastures. This is mostly due to working 60 hours a week and not having time to sort foals. But the busy season (at work) is over and I have more time for breeding and sorting now. I've just started on my pastures and already have 7 natural chimera foals! I'm so excited about this because I have only had one or two born on average the last several months.

I've dubbed this season the Year of the Chimera! Linked below is my chimera barn, with all my chimeras born this year. I'm hoping to do a lot of chimera x chimera embryos after I finish up my pastures and see just how many I end up with this year. I also want to see your chimeras. Have you had a good year for them as well?

  • Oh wow, what good luck! They're all adorable!

(If you end up not wanting either of these 2, they'd fit in perfectly into my Collectibles line:

  • So far I've lucked out twice with public studs, I love how many fancy genes these two have!

  • That's amazing! I hope I have as good luck when I'm breeding my chimera stud.
  • @Poppidoll Sorry, but I don't sell any of my chimeras. I keep them all for my lined chimera project. I do, however, offer straws/eggs on just about any horse I own, so when they come of age, I could get you some straws/eggs, if interested.

@Newamber you've got some beautiful babies there. It's always so exciting to find them when you aren't expecting them.

  • Thank you, lined chimeras are pretty much the only breeding project that I actually keep up with, they always make me so excited!

  • @haltanny, @ newamber, you say you breed chimera lines. Don't most of the foals created turn out non chimera? Do you keep those and breed back to a chimera? Or do you only keep and breed chimeras for that line? I'm curious how your strategy since it seems like a low chance of producing a chimera.
  • I keep all my foals, though out of my two pastures devoted to it I never get more than 1 or two if I'm lucky. I only put chimeras in those pastures to increase the chances (though it's not by much lol). I seem to have much more luck with ai implanting, though I'm not sure if there's difference in the chance percentage or I've just been fortunate. So for me at least, it's not so much strategy as chucking stuff together and hoping that it works! =))

  • Thanks for sharing. I curious about the strategy since they seem to occur infrequently. Good luck!

  • @Duven I use my non-chimera foals in my other lines, they usually fit in somewhere. I breed enough horses that I usually get 3 or 4 a season, except for the seasons where I don't breed all of my horses. I usually collect eggs from chimera Mares and breed them almost exclusively to chimera stallions. But every time I get a good chimera in a line and generation I don't already have one for, I max out and make a stallion. Several of my main studs for various generations are chimera. So since I use them so extensively, it increases the number I can produce.

  • Thanks for sharing. I do really like chimeras. Someday I'll probably try to focus on them more. My strategy with them at this point is haphazard since most of them don't align with my primary breeding goals.
  • I love lined chimeras.

  • I ended up with 10 last season and some of them really had a glow-up. Especially a couple of the ones with mushroom. Drool-worthy.

I only have 4 this season, which is just about normal for me. I'm mostly done breeding, so I don't expect any more this season. I absolutely love seeing everyone's chimeras though, so I'm glad y'all are still posting on this thread.
