Bootstrap discussion
-
Hi all, I am curious to see about everyone’s experiences with bootstrapping.
I would love to hear what everyone’s goals are in their bootstrap herds, or what colors they are working on, maybe a specific breed if they have one, or even just something interesting about their herds.
I feel kind of overwhelmed with the extent of all my projects and where everything is supposed to be, so I’d like to just take a step back and see how it’s going for everyone else.
And, as bonus, I will be randomly selecting someone from the comments to receive a double boosted foal and someone else to receive a single boosted bootstrap foal.
I may make multiple double boosted and single boosted foals to giveaway, or use some from past seasons, but I’m not sure yet.
Thanks all :x
And these two are the bonus prizes

Beautiful babies!
My current bootstrap goal is to get to high PT scores that go back to my own horses (as a majority of the lineage). I don't have a specific gene goal, just as flashy and fun as I can!
This gal is my 'ground zero' if you will for my renewed bootstraps (she's the first one I bred with this new goal in mind):
BVn Watermelon Rind
This handsome devil is one of my new stallions (by my first homebred ***Star stallion!):
BVn Spring Bug
And a few beautiful babies from this year's crop:

My main goal right now with my appaloosa line is to get snowflake and ee bred into the line, with the eventual goals of a red double boosted stallion, and a palomino double boosted stallion.
The reasoning is because it seems there aren't many (at least publicly) offered horses for breeding or for sales that have the ee. I've noticed it seems that most high PT horses are EE. Which I love a black horse, but I really like chestnuts especially a snowflake appaloosa. This is going decently. I'm up in the 13.00s with this most recent batch of babies.
I have some other color lines where I have a specific colored stallion in mind to double boost and keep the lines going.
I spent a lot of time in June trying to expand my lines, I created some new breeds to go with the new lines. I like simple colors too. Which again, colors that are simply "red roan" or "palomino" or maybe even "palomino dun appaloosa" are hard to find in the high PT horses.
I'm also super excited for my new breed. The stallion Nyx I'll list below, he'll have his first foal crop in August. But it's a super fun version of liver chestnuts. I think it makes them look otherworldly.

My focus on my lines up until now was to get the genes I wanted in each consistently, so this season is the first time I've been thorough with testing, and have tried out maxing some foals with a goal of now improving breeding quality.
That being said, I've got some nice ** babies for my next gens. I'm also at a point where my 2nd gens and lined horses are making it onto the point LBs, which has been validating. I'm very happy with how both my breeding and showing stock is progressing within my home-bred dudes. :D Some of my studs have been making appearances on Top Producer, so I feel I'm on the right track with my herd sire and mare pairings.
Metallics:
Brindles (Dun), pintos and appys, with pearl, sun, champagne, silver, satin, snow, belton, P+, gp, KP / KP2, and TE.
M4 Hit Me
M4 Gimme Loud
M4 Birthday Wish
Sierra:
Grey champagnes with grey reduction and satin.
S3 Yodel
S3 Lovers Odyssey
Cloudy Skies:
Grey Silver Grullos with Ice 20 and TE.
CS3 Solar Storm
CS3 Electrify
The only line I intentionally compete on the leaderboards with right now is my Collectibles line. They're also where my highest PT babies are, because I invested in improving them so quickly, with some reaching 14.5 without maxing.

My bootstrap project is still very new. I think June was when I removed all foundations from that pasture. I'm trying to just build up the quality. And trying to prevent breeding sites to daughters. I know it doesn't really matter...but I still can't bring myself to knowingly do it. I like satin and try to work that in. I'm not focusing on a color for now. Dang Burdens was my first quality stud so there is some flashy foals in there. He give a lot of whit spotted foals.

I use bootstrapping just for producing showstock, I had managed to get my stock up in quality and I was producing 14+pt more consistently but I took a big break so now I get to start again from the beginning, which I think is nice as with the changes to BA I think it will be much easier to get there quickly and it will be interesting to try again with this different approach. I have no colour or size goals other than the pt.
I managed to pick up this boy from cottonwoods and with the max out ability hey presto one magic cap quality stud to use.

My goals with my boostrap herd is to produce horses for my show herd. I don't really have any colors goals so it's just a mishmash of colors, though I do avoid fantasy genes for my BS herd. I am aiming to consistently produce ** foals with or near 14 PT score. I overhauled my herd a few seasons back so have been building back up to my previous level.
I am looking forward to seeing what this guy gives me for his first season.

I'm not even entirely sure if I'm doing the bootstrap thing right, but right now after a long hiatus (I'd only log in to move pasture foals) I'm trying to build my high PT quality paper level horses back up. I'm trying to keep satin, KIT M, KP, DP and Sooty+ in my herd. I'm doing fairly well at it, but with the BA changes it changes things. Makes it more challenging. But that's what it's about right? Taking a chance and hoping for the best. I took a risk with this guy and it paid off. Embryo from a 3yr old mare and a purchased straw. When I build my funds back up, he'll be GMT'd and boosted.

@Prancer I'm glad you're enjoying him! Although I wouldn't have bred him if not for Gracie3B. He's basically from her stock.| #59142 | Spotted | Reiner | Chocolatey | Enchanting | Stygien | Lunara |

I have been bootstrapping before I had any idea what it was. I've been breeding to high PT, ** or *** horses and combining them with my creates for sentimental reasons...lol.
I sure have benefited from the hard work of others. My goals are to get high PT, ** and *** horses in satin brown and liver with M white spotting on some.
I also have been very grateful for the kindness of others in this game. It has blown me away.

Everything is so lovely! There are some really cool projects here!
@BlueValley the seapony bc looks so good with your fantasy line, those foals are adorable!
@Cottonwoods your new breed really does look otherworldly, that background is just made for Nyx!
@Poppidoll Those are some really neat breeds. The Akhal-Teke bc is fitting for your metallics line with all its shiny genes! And I love ice 20, that’s a creative line you made with it!
@Duven Dang burdens is a pretty stud, I love the flashy kit m markings he can pass onto his foals! I’m a fan of satin too, I think it’s pretty popular in the game.
@Prancer I think that’s a great way to build good show stock, all my bootstraps in pasture are used for basically just that. And that will be a good stud! his sire, Stygian is super nice!
@HighstormFarm I love that your stud has Epitome Divide in his lines, that’s one of my favorite studs, I have some lines with epitome in them. And of course Pedro!
@Tomcat Criminal magic is gorgeous! I breed a lot of those genes, so you are welcome to look through my barns for bootstrap mares if you need any to pair with your colt for when he ages up.
@ZenCorgi this community really is awesome, I don’t think I’ve ever experienced this much support and kindness on an online game platform as this one.

@Gracie3B I was super lucky to own him for a few seasons, he was a great stallion. If you ever want straws just let me know. I should throw some up for public sale any way, lol :x

I decided to change up the way I mamage my bootstrap herd 2 months ago. I've cut back on my era 0 herd, removed most of the fantasy genes and been much stricter with the paper level. I'm currently working on removing pearl from the line, adding in GP and Snowflake.
This guy is my current favourite colour in game. I adored his sire, then managed to get this lovely boy in the auctions. I'm excited to see what he produces as my pastures develop.
BSSSS Winter Smoke
This is my first horse I have boosted to star ***
He is absolutely gorgeous and I cannot wait to introduce him to my pastures next season!

I've also started developing bootstrap herds in other eras. These are completely open genetics wise as long as they are not fantasy genes. I have managed to get stallions together for most of the eras now. I am particularly proud of my era 3 boy, who has won lots of awards!

I have absolutely no goal with my bootstraps, except for making lots of show ponies. And that is a thing I love about it. All the other lines I have to find the perfect stud, and sort through each and every foal, but my bootstraps I just throw in one of my boosted boys in, do mass testing, and do a mass naming of the mares. I dont even give the mares individual mares. The only ones I sort through are the boys, and that is just if I feel like it, cuz I only keep one colt per stud anyway. Most times I just geld them all and throw them in a show barn :))ID 108

I guess I call my eras 0-3 bootstrap as they are the ones I use ba instead of sba. But I'm still trying to get as many fantasy genes on **'s as I can for my show herd. Starting in era 4, while still often uneven I can trace back to my own horses. I tried even breeding for a couple of years and switched back out of it.45120

@Gracie3B Thank you! I won Ice20 in the christmas scavenger hunt. It seems like a pretty rare one on this server! I just got the BCs last month, they've really helped me appreciate my medium boned horses more! :)
@Ellesmere022 If you end up offering straws from Bigprojectbaby please let me know! He's gorgeous! :x
I put aside a bunch of wild bay straws this year to ensure the LB reaches 25, so you should get some GMTs from your Era 3 boy :P

Update- It's definitely a slow process. I'm still breeding this season. But I managed 2 ee fillies a chestnut (14.8PT) and palomino (14.8 PT) that I double boosted in hopes they'll be bred in September to make me goal stallions. Those chestnut and palomino stallions should be born in September, and be ready for their first breeding seasons in November. It's a long game for sure. I'm pretty sure If I breed these two mares to my double boosted red roan the babies should be able to max to 15.00, which is super exciting for me.

A little off topic, but how exactly is everyone affording their bootstrap projects without paying real money for hbs? I know I don't have the greatest horses, but trying to sell and trying to auction horses has been a nightmare, I've spent way more than I've gotten in return and I'm left with nothing to continue my bootstrap breeding or even regular breeding.
-
@TomCat this is an excellent question. I'm curious about this as well.
I am spending a little bit of real money because I can't seem to figure out how to make money on the game, which I am thankful I have the option to do so.
I am selling eggs from mares I don't use, selling high PT foals that I don't plan to keep and this definitely helps to close the gap, but still isn't enough. I think unfortunately that the best way to make consistent money is with the daily show bonus, just continue to accumulate horses until your bonus is 1 million hbs a day. Then you can convert to hbs for bulk storing. Which is my plan, based on myself asking several other players that very same question.
Apparently it takes a lot of time to accumulate those shoe ponies. I am now trying to buy/create 20-25 new horses every day. Whether it be I buy some pointed horses, or I create "perfect foundations" or "great show horses". I look through the forum for the herd helpers that make decent show horses twice a day in hopes to create some. It kind of has the opposite effect on the budget short term, but long term should really help the daily show bonus.| #59142 | Spotted | Reiner | Chocolatey | Enchanting | Stygien | Lunara | -
@TomCat @Cottonwoods
I saved up all the IVs I could to buy barns (1000 stalls) and then invested all my other hbs in pointed show horses. I joined in September 2023 I believe, and this season and last are the first time I've GMTd or maxed anyone because that show herd was where all my resources went.
Bare in mind that as you buy barns, the cost of new ones goes up!

I'm currently weeding through my stallions through comparison testing. Can only afford to do so many, but it's a start. The ones that don't pass muster get gelded for the show herd, which is growing nicely. My problem is it costs so much to enter shows that I end up making less from them than it cost me to enter.Mosspearl Stables

@Poppidoll part of my issue is my fault. I went a little nuts last month with the 2500hb DHH reroll. I got a lot of pointed horses from it, but it seems like they're not gaining points despite being entered in shows every week. My daily bonus is about 5700ish hbs. I sold some of my barns for IVs to be able to GMT a few foals in hopes of making good breeding stock out of them in hopes of making money off stud fees. I want to be able to sell straws for 10k each like some of these studs, but I'll never get there.
-
@TomCat if I have horses that I need to gain points and aren't I make sure they aren't entered in a show with any of my other horses, that gives them the best chance.| #59142 | Spotted | Reiner | Chocolatey | Enchanting | Stygien | Lunara |
-
@TomCat A good show herd will make you the most money in the long run. Selling or studding horses can be very hit or miss and is very dependent on what is in demand at the moment.
Also make sure you are training your horses every week. Training makes them do better in shows which result in more points. -
Cottonwoods - It does not matter if they show against others in your barn. A horse that will lose against your own horses would lose against others. You are not more likely to get all winners by spreading them out. You are just as likely to get all losers.
I have tested it many times over the years. Just bulk-enter them all together. Spreading them out is a waste of time.Need to contact me? Read this first. Only send me a PM for PayPal issues or if I ask you to. Otherwise, make a forum post. You will get a better faster answer by making a post.

@HighstormFarm I have a basic upgrade so they're automatically trained each week and I bulk enter them in shows. I guess I'm just an impatient person by nature and can't wait for them to actually start making points lol The chances of another unplanned hiatus are high while having an 18 month old. That's how I ended up logging back in with almost 5mil. I didn't actively play, I just got on to move pasture foals around.
-
@HighstormFarm That’s awesome you owned him! And I would love a couple straws from him!
@Ellesmere022 I absolutely adore Imported Drama! One of my newer herd sires is a son of imported drama. I’m so happy to have those genetics in my lines.

Well, over six years of gameplay should allow anyone to build a good show herd haha; it’s definitely on the higher end of daily payouts. It took a very long time to reach this point though.
And happy to be of help! I loved hearing about everyone’s goals and seeing their pretty ponies!
I’ll probably give this a day or two more before I do a drawing for the prizes.
