Introducing The Dutch Warmblood and State of the Game Updates - Game Feedback wanted
  • image
I waited on a true warmblood BC until I felt like I could really do it justice. I am so glad we did because I feel like this one is a true knockout. It's got to be my new favorite BC.

The DW is now available for you to unlock and is included for those with a BC subscription.

Something of note is that the foal's hind legs are quite spread apart. That means for now the far side hind leg is going to have some errors. We know about that and it will get fixed but we have to do a bunch of reprogramming the image generator to work for 4 legs instead of 2. It's the same for all BCs. It's already on our list.

    Personal Updates

I wanted to give you all some updates on how the move is going. Yesterday we spent hours with our lawyer at notaries and the immigration office. It was worth it though because as of yesterday I am officially a legal EU resident and have started my process towards permanent residency. Haystack also applied for his residency today and will have his in a few weeks.

Immigrating to the EU with a child is very complicated. Yesterday we applied for the family reunification process for our daughter. Once that is approved Haystack has to fly with her back to the United States. They will have to stay there for an unspecified number of weeks (Most of August probably) until she has a visa and is allowed to fly back to the EU. Only then can she apply for her residency.

Yes, it's a really stupid and expensive process. It's also very disruptive. We appreciate your patience while we are doing all this flying back and forth dealing with immigration offices. It's very hard to run a company while dealing with this. It's a lot and it's overwhelming.

All that said, we are loving it here. It's an easy and gentle way of life. The food quality is so nice, it's incredibly safe, everyone is less stressed and has time to enjoy life. We just got to get through the last bit of this moving process.

    State of the Game

2 more breed characteristics coming this year
We have already put out 5 new BCs this year (Irish Draught, Thoroughbred, Dutch Warmblood, PonPon and Seapony.) We are planning to put 2 more in 2024. A fantasy one for Halloween and a real breed for December. We have not locked down what those will be yet.

Instead of doing an eighth BC this year we are going to go back to some of those early attempts and look at fixing up the shading and some of the details. We have learned a lot about how to make the horses look good and think we can do can improve upon our early efforts now.

We will make sure and put the old versions and the new versions to a vote by the members who use that BC before we switch things over. If you’ve invested in these BC’s we want you to have a voice. The Saddlebred and Friesian are first on our glow-up list.

We also plan to use this extra time to work on converting our 333-pixel high backgrounds to 500 and phasing out the old shorter backgrounds.

    Image Generator Queue Status
I would love to be able to give you a holistic explanation of what is going on with the image generator queue. I can’t because understanding why we had issues requires so much technical knowledge that any explanation I can give would be meaningless to you. What I can tell you is that we had a problem where the generator queue was getting stuck in a loop and other issues where our server farm was using old information. This happened while Haystack was traveling internationally. As soon as he could dedicate a large amount of work hours, he got things stabilized. He is actively working on changing how our generator handles the queue to make our system more robust and improve our operating costs.

Back in January we turned off automatic image generation in the the background (that means pasture foals, aging up, etc) for everyone except premium accounts. Meaning if you did not have a premium you have to open the page of your horse to see an updated image. We did this as a cost-cutting measure to slow the game's hemorrhaging of money. You can read about it in the thread “Unfortunate news about image generation - big change for non-premium accounts”

At this time we still do not have an ETA to get it running for non-premium accounts yet. This month is going to be a MASSIVE server bill because of all the times our generator got clogged up. I am hopeful that the new queue system will get our costs to a more reasonable amount and we restore this functionality for those with basic upgrades soon. We will keep you posted when we have more news.

The image generation system is a massive hydra with tons of heads we have to keep talking to one another (and all the heads are orange cats). The queue is just one of these. It takes deep focus and tons of hours to make improvements to it. Clear focus and long stretches of free work hours are not something we have had in spades while dealing with an incredibly expensive and stressful move in the middle of an economic downturn. We are on the downslope at this point though. The worst is past us and we are all looking forward to getting this beast tamed.

    Skin Generation Status
Did you know that our image generator creates skins for your horses just like a video game? This is another head on the hydra that needs work. The skin system was built to only handle the near side legs. The new BCs have far-side legs showing as well. We did some bandaid fixes to prevent the worst of the visual errors from that but the system needs some serious work to get everything showing correctly. We really want to get this work done but the move and server stability issues have been screaming for our attention. I just wanted to make it clear that we know there are issues there and we can’t wait to fix them for you.

Same with the overdue improvements to the Advanced Tack editor like mane swapping, moving brands etc. Those changes are on our list. We are so excited to get to them. We just have to muck out the barn of all the gross unfun background poop first.

  • Check in on Changes - Feedback wanted
When I make changes to the meta of the game, I try and make a point to keep an eye on things and make sure it is working well. Here are the changes we have made in the past year that I want some feedback on.

    -3yr old egg donors
In February I allowed 3-year-old mares to have eggs pulled. I said at that time I was going to start with just eggs and we could add 3-year-old embryo creation to that if everything went well. From what I can see it is super smooth and has been going fantastic. How do people feel about adding direct embryo collection at 3 as well?

    -Primary Era
One change I have been keeping an eye on is moving the primary era forward. I am very happy with how this going. Once I finish moving the primary era come December it will perfectly line up so that era becomes the primary era just as that era is starting to hit the breeding ability cap and the race for that era is finishing. With the adjusted timeline you will never be able boost into a primary era and dominate it without having participated in the race to cap for that era.

I know a lot of you don’t know what that means, don’t worry about it. Just know it has to do with the deep strategy related to the brand new eras that start every 6 months. This is such a high-level and complicated strategy that impacts so few people that I am not asking the general population what they think of it. Please don’t ask for lb strats on this thread, make a new post. If you are one of the small handful of members who have been aggressively competing in these new eras though I am happy for any feedback on moving the primary era. (Not other lb changes, please. See below)

    -New Era LB rebalancing
In April we started a system of trying to make competition in the newest eras more egalitarian. The original plan was to switch the price to IVs, then we settled on limiting some eras. I don’t think we have quite nailed our goals here just yet. Please don’t post feedback about that change here. I am going to make a dedicated post about it so we can have a community discussion. It needs more than we can fit in this thread.

    -Breeding Lab Changes
This breeding lab update has been the slowest of slogs. Sorry about that. Not only am I dealing with the move and all that entails but I have to run vast other swaths of the business as well. Please know lots more improvements are coming on this one. It’s on my to list for tomorrow even! That said, if you have feedback you want to share I am all ears.

    ---------------

Thank you for your patience with us on this stuff, and for making it through this monster post. I try to give a good rundown of what’s going on a few times a year. This is your opportunity to let us know what is or is not working for you so we can adjust our plans accordingly (Again lb era limits will get its own thread soon.)

We appreciate you so much! Thanks for taking care of our family.

  • I absolutely adore the Dutch Warmblood!

I am in awe of your ability to juggle so much. You are Wonder Woman and you have my complete admiration!

I love all of the changes and look forward to the changes to come!

I’m very happy that your move is finally smoothing out and winding down and that you will have a chance to just breath and relax. You deserve it! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
  • I've really enjoyed all of the changes, truly. I would love to have 3yo embryos and the eggs have been working great for me.

And yes, that Dutch WB is to die for :x

  • The Dutch Warmblood is gorgeous!

I think direct embryo collection for 3y/o mares would be great. Collecting eggs has been amazing.

I am liking the changes to the Primary era(s) so members can't boost their way to the top. It is still competitive, but feels more fair.

I have enjoyed the breeding lab changes, being able to pull straws from a stallion's page has been very helpful. Also putting straws up for public sale is great!

A huge thank you to you and your team for all the hard work! :x

As for the changes, I do really enjoy being able to flush 3 yo's. it helps with the breeding program by moving the goals up. Actually, I love all changes that have been made so far. The fact that you've done it all with an international move is absolutely incredible. Thanks so much to the team for all the hard work!

Breeding Warmbloods of superior quality that suit my fancy!

  • A note about the lb changes: I actually started a season behind with the current primary era because of changes and I am still in the running based on rng. The current top contender for 12 is gen8 and 13.9pt. Mine is currently gen6 and 13.6. Considering the fact that I should have been out of the running completely but I’m not is quite interesting. Same for era 13. I think it’s really era 15 where we will see the changes.

I love the Dutch warmblood BC. You are going to make it hard for me to pick which ones I want to use in my lines. I worked with GP jumpers for awhile so I have a soft heart for them.

Congrats on your move! I hope everything goes smoothly from here on out.

  • That's because as you get higher in ability the gains you get each generation get smaller and smaller. The era will hit cap before you actually catch the leader but ya you can totally stay with the pack even if you start a bit behind.

  • Thank you, Ammit! The Dutch Warmblood is incredible.
I really like the 3yo eggs change, and I think the other changes have been lovely. I know the breeding lab changes are just the tip of the iceberg that you have planned, but they have been really, really good QOL updates! Especially searching straws and pulling from the horse's page.

I am just starting to get era competitive, and so far I think the updates have been very reasonable. I'll chime in more on the discussion posts!

Regardless, thank you for all that you do. Making large meta changes while in the middle of a move of this scale is somewhat bonkers, but I think you've done an impressive job of it!

  • The Dutch warmblood came out absolutely stunning! Thank you for your hard work, I know this has been incredibly difficult but you have still made the time to be good to the game players, and we appreciate it so much.

  • See, now I'm not as impatient about getting to a stock type breed characteristic, because the images are getting better and better with each new breed! By the time you get to stock horses you will have an advanced degree in fractal mathematics and the horses will be holographic images galloping around my living room! (Now that I say that, I don't think I will appreciate holographic images breeding or foaling in my living room all that much. I've already seen enough of that stuff to last for a while longer!) :)) :D
