My first half decent painting :)
  • Hi everyone! Mind you, I cannot finish any painting to save my life. But here's a little something I'm working on and quite proud of. Would really appreciate some insight since I'm not that familiar with horse anatomy, I mostly draw what I see/remember from real life horses. This time I tried using reference (a picture of superficial muscles).
The background is the best thing I could come up with from memory.
Don't mind the shading, I know it's wrong and quite muddy, will probably redo.

  • Very well drawn!
For shading the hind end I would recommend finding pictures of horses at shows as reference. The muscle contours you added are accurate but a lot of the muscles over the hip and toward the stifle are flatter and don't noticeably create shadows like they do on the thigh.
You did an outstanding job with the front end and especially the shoulder contours. I can never get those right when I draw and my horses look like their shoulder is just glued on as a result.

  • Yup Silverborn, he looks like he's on steroids lol. It took me years to figure out how to draw the shoulders and I can only summarise it with "draw two little asymmetrical buttcheeks above the leg". Will fix the shading as soon as I can, maybe I will keep on using thoroughbreds as reference as they tend to be leaner.
  • It's best to use the breed you want the horse to be. Cobs and drafts do have more defined muscles but their body shape is also much different from a thoroughbred, if you use TB reference there's a chance the horse will end up too flat. There's going to be more muscle definition here just because the shape of the body means the muscles are more rounded and defined, even if the horse is out of shape. A bit like drawing a bulldog but using a greyhound for muscle reference. ;)

  • Noted, time to surf the net for beefy Percherons xD
  • For a first attempt, this is great! Now draw 100 more! And good luck in medical school!
