pricing strategy
  • Hi all!

I have started producing some really nice foals more recently and am trying to figure out a fair way to price them.

what do you feel is fair pricing for a horse? does color, PT, papers, points, genes, consistency, or lineage play a part in how you price your horses?

    thank you!
  • I've been playing for 8 years and I have never figured out pricing. For the most part give up on making any money selling foals. We all like our own thing and that's what we breed for and what someone else breeds isn't going to be as close. For the most part that's not really how the economy works here anyways. Most of it is from showing. Very rarely have I seen anything above create price. The only time I've seen insane prices is pointed created. Sometimes double gold eggs. Or maybe foundation eggs with closed genes. Snowflake used to go for an absolute fortune but last time I tried to sell snowflake I couldnt even dump them for create price. I recently paid 30k for evenly bred 3G era 14 horses because that's a limited thing. They were maxed at every generation etc. Even my 5G/6G evenly bred mares usually go for low 4/5 figures and they take a real life year to make.

If you have examples i might be slightly more helpful? I haven't played much in a year or so so maybe things have changed.

  • Seconding this, while you can make a little money off selling them, you generally are not going to make much. Straws and eggs, especially from cap level or tricked-out foundations, will often sell for more than foals will! But even those won't be your main money maker, just a little extra pocket change. Your show herd daily bonus, on the other hand, is going to sustain you - larger barns tend to make upward of 100-200k per day, with some longterm members on here even managing to make it to the 1 million hbs per day mark. Selling a nice foal for 20k really doesn't look like much next to that! :))

As for what to price your current ones, it's an ever-changing market, but depending on what "nice" means you can probably ask 10k per and get the interest of a buyer or two, which will make you a small profit above breeding/testing costs. Beyond that, posting examples to the foals will help us - if they're second gen (two foundation parents) or high level (**gold/**star) with genes that a lot of people like, you might get more interest for higher prices, maybe 20-40k for particularly nice ones.

  • Color and PT come in a little for me but I typically sell by paper level. I have set numbers for each paper level, I usually don’t deviate just to keep it easy for me! Sometimes I might if they’re really plain or really fancy but not often.
Echoing what Lallyhop said- show barns are the best way to make hbs, selling ponies doesn’t compare. I’m at 287+k daily right now, and it goes up for me rapidly. (Do I count as a larger barn these days, @Lallyhop :(( )

  • I'm at 450k @VenemousGiant! I've found I'll max out at 600k with my amount of stalls which I have capped before. I'm at max iv purchase of stalls. Really wish I could afford more 1000 stall barns and 100 acre pastures

  • @HunterUnderSaddleGirl that’s awesome! I started building my show herd not long ago, so I’m pretty pleased with how rapidly it’s progressed. I went a little backwards in playing, I started competing on the boards first and got on them, while completely ignoring my show string. It was so worth it to sit back and focus on it- my first from scratch line is now up high on the color boards, and it was funded almost completely by my show ponies :x I don’t really have to try to scrape up money to boost ponies anymore, which is such a fantastic feeling. I hit my one year playing mark back in September- hopefully come next year I’ll have doubled what I have now

  • @HunterUnderSaddleGirl I know someone else around here regularly offers 8-9mil hbs for people to buy them 210 stall barns with irl money, so if you want more show bonus you can certainly keep going! :))

  • Yes you can pay someone HB's to buy them for you. You just have to put your account ID in after adding to their cart.
